It’s very common to see neglected and worn out garden furniture. It may be one of those things you never have time to get to, or perhaps you don’t know what products you need to use to restore your wood back to its former glory – luckily, we’re here to show you how!
As you can see from this picture, over time this garden table has become grey and dirty. It’s one of those things that you see slowly change over time and it’s not until the next summer, you realise just how sad your furniture is really looking.
Recently, our good friend Roger from R and A Pressure Washing (visit his website using the link at the bottom of this post) emailed us these photos to show us just what a difference Owatrol products had made to his customer’s teak table. We think you’ll agree that the transformation is beautiful.
So, how did he get these results?
Firstly, Prepdeck was used to strip the previous coating
As the teak table had been previously coated in the past, Roger had to strip off the old finish. Failing to do this will alter your overall finish as Owatrol products need to penetrate into the wood to give the desired effect – something that cannot be done if there is a previous coating on there.
Roger worked in areas that could be completed in around 15 mins and then applied the Prepdeck stripper undiluted onto the table.
After about 15 minutes, you can test a small area with a nylon scrubbing brush to see if the finish is lifting. If it is, scrub the area with a stiff nylon brush, or alternatively, a pressure washer at 1000 – 1500 psi (70-103 bars) depending on the type of wood you are using it on.
Once sufficiently scrubbed, rinse with copious amounts of fresh water.
Secondly, Net-Trol was used to clean the table
Roger used Net-Trol to lighten and restore the natural colour of their weathered, greyed wood – without bleaching it.
One of our favourite products, Net-Trol effortlessly removes ground in and surface dirt in as little as 15 minutes, leaving the table looking bright and vibrant.
Before applying Net-Trol, Roger wet the table with clean water.
Once the table was sufficiently wet, he applied Net-Trol with a sponge and then scrubbed the decking – you can also do this with a stiff synthetic brush. Roger worked to ensure that he had scrubbed the Net-Trol thoroughly into the spaces between the table slats.
After leaving the Net-Trol to stand for approximately 15-20 minutes (if it started to dry, Roger applied a mist of water to keep it wet), he used a presser washer (max. 60 bar) to clean the table. If you don’t have a pressure washer, you can scrub the surface whilst simultaneously rinsing it with water.
Lastly, the table was finished with Teak-Olje
Teak-Olje is a blend of Owatrol Oil and high quality teak oil for Teak and other exotic hardwoods. Protecting and enhancing the natural beauty of the wood, Teak Olje is a deep penetrating, clear oil that gives a rich warm appearance to any treated wood surface.
As Teak-Olje is a saturating oil, it protects and nourishes the wood from within its pores rather than forming a film on the surface which means that it will not peel or flake. It is also easy to maintain with no sanding or stripping required and gives a rich, matt finish.
Roger applied 3 even applications of Teak-Olje, ‘wet-on-wet’. To do this, he first applied the initial coat and allowed it to penetrate (normally 15-30 minutes). At this point he then applied the second coat and allow this to penetrate as well (if necessary, apply more coats following the same process until the wood is ‘saturated’ and will take no more oil).
You must not allow the Teak-Olje to become touch dry between applications, so Roger worked in smaller sections to ensure this wouldn’t happen.
Roger then brushed out any excess Teak-Olje with a lint-free cloth 15-20 minutes after the last application to avoid shiny spots.
And there you have it! A beautifully restored teak garden table ready to be used and enjoyed once again.
