How to get your carpets good as new with a spray extraction machine

Naturally at this time of year, many people are thinking about getting their houses ready for visitors and this may include spring cleaning your carpets. With high street carpet cleaning products you will have difficulty in achieving good results and it’s going to take a long time! You are better off hiring a spray extraction machine to do the job – and it’s not nearly as complicated as you might think.

Spray extraction machines can be hired inexpensively from many dry cleaners and even some supermarkets as well as from different locations online. You can pick one up for as little as £20 for the day – although often if you hire at the weekend you will have more time, especially if the shop isn’t open on Sundays!

Each machine manufacturer is slightly different and the machines will operate in slightly different ways. You will be given clear instructions when hiring the machine but broadly speaking you usually mix a concentrated cleaning solution into an agreed amount of water and pour it into the machine. You then usually pull the machine slowly over your carpet, allowing the water and cleaning liquid to be sprayed into the carpet and then extracted again. Try not to move too quickly as this gives less time for the solution to take effect and less time for the liquid to be extracted – leaving you with a soggier carpet which will take longer to dry. Make sure you keep an eye on the chamber to ensure that you don’t continue with no fluid left – it’s a big waste of your time!

It is best to remove all furniture from the rooms you are treating but if this is not possible then clean the carpet in stages, ideally allowing plenty of drying time before moving the furniture. Be sure to repeat the cleaning process on the edge of the part you have already cleaned to avoid a tide mark from appearing. Once the carpet has completely dried – which will take quite  while – give the room a good vacuum and voila! Don’t underestimate either, how satisfying it is each time you empty that dirty water chamber and see all the dirt that’s no longer in your carpet!
