Warranty

Owatrol International warrants Decking Paint against peeling on wood decks for 5 years and against cracking, peeling and flaking on wood cladding for 15 years from the date of purchase if it is applied on bare wood to a properly prepared surface according to label directions – this means that all previous coatings MUST be properly removed before applying Decking Paint or the adhesion could be compromised.

Owatrol International will, at its option, replace the material or refund the purchase price if Decking Paint does not perform as described above. Please see the technical data for the full warranty.

Surface Preparation

New wood surfaces

Before using Decking Paint, all surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease and mildew. However, in addition new wood also has a hard shiny surface known as mill glaze which prevents maximum penetration – preventing any coating from adhering properly. We would always recommend new wood is treated with Seasonite new wood protection and then allowed to weather for a minimum of 6 months after which time Decking Paint can be applied following the  instructions for weathered wood.

Weathered wood surfaces

Uncoated wood surfaces which have weathered for 6 months of more simply need a thorough cleaning to restore their original colour and remove any built-up dirt and grime before applying decking paint. To do this simply use Net-Trol wood cleaner which is scrubbed on, allowed to work and then rinsed off. Be sure to allow your wood to dry thoroughly for 48 hours afterwards before applying Decking Paint.

Previously coated surfaces

In this case, first sand or scrape to remove any loose, flaking or peeling finish (if there is any). If necessary, you should strip the surface with Dilunett Gel before cleaning and neutralising it with Net-Trol wood cleaner. Then allow 48 hours for the surface to dry before applying Decking Paint.

Application of Owatrol’s Decking Paint

Owatrol’s Decking Paint is easy to apply by following these simple instructions.

First apply a coat of Decking Paint avoiding heavy application. Be sure to work it into the grooves of the deck to ensure even protection. Next allow this coat to dry for 3-4 hours before applying a second coat. If applying by spray, always back-brush or back-roll immediately after application to ensure uniformity of colour, coverage and penetration.

Maintenance

Surfaces with harsh exposure to weather or traffic will wear more quickly than other areas. In these cases, clean affected areas with Net-Trol and recoat as necessary.

Clean Up

Clean all tools and equipment with soap and water whilst still wet. If allowed to dry, remove with paint stripper.

Rags soaked in this product should be soaked with water before disposing of with household waste.

Please Note: Woods high in tannins e.g. Cedar, Ipe, Oak, Teak will darken when treated with Aquanett, Prepdeck or Dilunett. Neutralising with Net-Trol immediately after rinsing will lighten and restore the woods colour.

It is imperative that a contact time test is done when using Aquanett, Prepdeck or Dilunett on Oak, Chestnut and other high tannin content woods to avoid blackening the wood – Refer to the relevant TDS.

Things to Remember

  • Before starting your project, test penetration and absorbency by sprinkling water lightly onto the wood. If the water is absorbed rapidly, surface is free of contamination and ready for staining. If water is repelled, thorough preparation, as for new wood must be performed.
  • Before starting application, test the colour choice on a small area and allow to dry to determine final colour.
  • Purchase sufficient product for the whole job and mix all product together before starting to avoid colour variances.
  • If applying with a sprayer it must be (.017-.021 tip at 1800-2000 psi (124-138 bars)
  • Cover everything you do not wish to coat, including plants and shrubs.
  • Apply between 10°C and 35°C.
  • Do not apply in direct sunlight, on hot surfaces.
  • Do not apply if cold and/or wet weather is expected within 48 hours.
  • Mix product thoroughly before and during application. Do not thin.
  • Always work the entire length of a deck board or horizontal siding to a logical break, such as a window or door frame.
  • Vertical siding should be coated from top to bottom.

    Hi,
I am so pleased to say how excellent the fence paint is. The coverage is fantastic and the colour suits our forest school area. We were fortunate to be donated some paint for our developing forest school area. We are a small special needs school and the area looks amazing for our children.

I have to say what a pleasure it was to meet Gary and his father Ken! What a brilliant family business! I would recommend everyone to purchase their products from Owatrol!

    Thanks

Really good coverage and appears non-slip at present, which was a big issue previously. My decorator also did his research and came up with this product. The aged grey looks good and has really lightened up the area. Only issue is that the decking literally drank the paint up so we had to order double the recommended amount. Would definitely use this again. Also, extremely good service and communications

This sounds perfect as the previous paint didn’t last very long and was not cheap! Begins with a V! Do we have to strip off or can we paint on top, planning to go dark grey from dark blue

      Hi Sue,

Unfortunately you will need to remove the previous paint as otherwise the Decking Paint will be adhering to the old finish rather than the wood and so will only be as good as that finish in terms of adherence (which seems like it has been disappointing). You would need to remove the old finish with a suitable stripper (we’d recommend trying a sample of Dilunett) to take it back to bare wood so that the Decking Paint can adhere to the wood.

Hi I have treated my decking with a dark stain and she wants it a light colour
can i apply this paint on top of the stain without any primer or undercoat.

      Hi Paul,

Unfortunately you can’t apply Decking Paint on top of another stain as we can’t guarantee the adherence of that previous coating and the Decking Paint would be adhering to that rather than the wood itself. To use Decking Paint (or any of our other finishes) you would first need to strip your existing stain using Dilunett or another brand of wood strippers.

If you need any further help please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Hi. All the comments are recent ones stating they are confident that the paint will last 5years. Are there any older reviews that would help prove it does? Thanks.

      Hi Adam,

This photograph shows the surface after 3 years. It was applied in 2014. Generally speaking customers leave their reviews quite soon after purchasing so unfortunately we don’t tend to get many reviews about the longevity. Decking 3 years after application

      Many thanks,

Before I painted my newly installed deck I did a little unscientific trial. I had my builder leave me a decking plank and painted it with one coat , I placed it on the gravel by the door and walked on it each time I went in and out of the house. The paint held up well no scuffing or signs of damage to the surface. Because I have dogs I wanted to seee how it would hold up with their claws running over it. I turned the plank paint side down on the gravel and again walked over it every time I went in and out for a week. I was amazed to find little or no damage to the painted surface. It did get grubby but that’s hardly suprising. It was just a case of going over the plank with a mop and it came up like new. I was pleased with the results of my test and went ahead and painted the deck. The paint goes on easily and it gives good coverage. We tried a new household roller but found it didn’t get into the grooves of the decking . My wife persevered with a soft brush to complete the job. We let it dry for a couple of days before applying the second coat. For the second. Coat we purchased a thick piled decking roller, this made the second application a very easy quick job. One of the things I love about this paint is the clean up is so easy , how such a tough paint can be cleaned with just water is suprising.
The paint has been down a couple of weeks and with constant daily traffic it hasn’t had any detrimental affect on the Finnish. The paint has a five year life , judging by my initial tests and how it has stood up to daily traffic and three dogs I am both pleased and confident I picked the right paint for the job. I know how the paint stands up on a horizontal surface as I have used it on cladding, I am now confident this is going to stand the test of time. I highly recommend this treatment for decking it’s the best there is having spent pounds on many products that just don’t work it’s a money saver in the long run.

I have used the black on my summer house cladding this paint is amazing it’s been on the cladding for three years now no fading peeling it still looks like it was painted yesterday. I am about to order the paint for my newly laid decking , in the past I have tried oils Cuprinol ronseal none of the work on decking they look terrible after one winter , I know this product is expensive compared to other decking paints but the others don’t work and your decking looks awful in no time. If this works on deck flooring as well as it does on my summer house it will be worth every penny . I was advised by the company if it’s a heavy traffic area apply two coats , so more expense but if it looks good after two years it would be worth it.five years would make it very affordable .
