Having stained half a fence with a colour took me a while to realise I hated (!!), I thought I might have caused myself a massive and irreversible problem. Hoping for the best, fearing the worst, I called the manufacturer of the stain and they suggested giving Owatrol a try.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, the fence now looks like new. Not only has the Dilunett stripped the awful stain out, the Net-trol has cleaned it up to look like it did when it first went in. The only problem I have now is that I want to clean up the panels I didn't 'ruin' as they look scruffy next to the ones I did. Worst problems I suppose....!!

I read up on this product and had high hopes for it but to be honest was a little sceptical about the review from the company. I clean decking for a living and have used other products before.

I followed the instructions to the letter, what they don’t tell you is to have a seat ready I couldn’t believe my eyes, I needed to sit down. The product was amazing, I reckon it saved me at least 2 hours of very hard work and whilst it initially appears pricey it’s definitely worth it. I won’t be using anything else from now on.

If you want before and after pictures I’ve got them.

Dilunett is a solvent and paraffin free paint stripper that will remove any oil and alkyd based paint, varnish or woodstain. Dilunett’s powerful formula strips up to 8 coats of finish in just one application. Suitable for almost any surface such as wood, metal and plastic, Dilunett’s gel consistency means it will not run, making it ideal for us on vertical surfaces, elaborate plaster or wood designs that are in need of being stripped.

Easy to apply, Dilunett dissolves paint in even the smallest of recesses and the finest of details, softening all the layers for a simple and clean removal.
Biodegradable and non-flammable, Dilunett is even safe to use in poorly ventilated or confined areas.

Ideal uses for Dilunett

  • Can be used on most surfaces; on wood (some woods such as Oak and Chestnut require more attention before using Dilunett), metal (except Aluminum), plastic, stone, cement etc
  • Wood Stain Remover
  • Ideal for surfaces difficult to strip due to size or intricate design and horizontal and vertical surfaces.
  • Solvent-free so no toxic fumes.
  • Dilunett is capable of removing up to 8 coats of finish in 1 application.
  • Ideal for stripping large areas as Dilunett is non-flammable, does not dry out and remains active a long time.

Always read the Dilunett Gel Product Information before using and follow the instructions carefully.

Surface preparation

Remove any loose and flaking paint.

Brush off any physical surface contamination i.e. moss, general dirt etc.

Application

  • Apply a thick coat of Dilunett over the whole surface to be stripped. For woods rich in tannins, work large areas in zones to avoid excessive darkening of the wood.
  • Allow product to work – see below for average working times.
  • Remove Dilunett and dissolved paint with a stiff nylon scrubbing brush or paint scraper while flushing with water, alternatively use a pressure washer (max 60bars / 870psi).
  • NB: The use of hot water makes the job easier.
  • Thoroughly rinse the surface with fresh clean water.
  • After stripping and rinsing. All porous surfaces must be immediately treated with Net-trol while still wet to neutralise the surface.

Average work times

For alkyd/oil paint, stains and varnishes:

  • For removal of 1 coat: 5-15 mins
  • For removal of 2 coats: 10-30 mins
  • For removal of 3 coats: 15-45 mins

For acrylic paint, stains and varnishes:

  • Test on a small area to determine working time

*Note: The above are average working times only. A test should be carried out to determine the actual contact time required to remove the requisite number of coats.

Clean up

Dilunett is biodegradable and solvent-free so all you need for clean up is water.

Restrictions

  • Dilunett will not remove the following types of coatings 2 pack or baked on paints. Polyurethane paint and varnish.
  • Do not use on “weak” woods such as veneers.
  • Do not use on aluminium.

Things to remember

  • Always carry out a preliminary test to determine the contact time required for stripping.
  • Wear chemical resistant gloves, safety goggles and protective clothing.
  • For best results on wood, do not let Dilunett work longer than required to dissolve the paint.
  • Hardwoods, especially those rich in tannins (Teak, Oak, Sapele, Chestnut etc) can turn dark if in prolonged contact with Dilunett.
  • Where Dilunett has darkened the wood DO NOT allow it to dry, prior to using Net-trol.
  • Treat stripped wooden surfaces with Net-Trol to restore the woods original colour.
  • Cover and protect everything you do not wish to strip, including plants and shrubs.
  • Apply between 5°C and 35°C. Do not apply in direct sunlight or on a hot surface.
  • Do not allow Dilunett to dry on the surface. If drying occurs dampen with mist application of water.

Consult us for additional information and advice prior to using Dilunett on Oak and Chestnut.

Hello will this remove Oratrol Decking Paint from my deck ? Many thanks.

      Owatrol Team

      Hi Eric,

      Thank you for your query.

Dilunett should work fine at removing Decking paint from your deck. However, with all our stripping products we always recommend purchasing a sample pot first and testing it in a small inconspicuous area.
The samples are £5 for 100ml with free shipping – https://www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/dilunett-gel/

After you have used Dilunett it is imperative that you use Net-Trol – https://www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/net-trol/
Net-Trol is a neutraliser which stops the active ingredient in Dilunett from continuing to work.

If you are applying the Dilunett to Oak or Chestnut wood, please consult us for additional information and advice.

I hope this was helpful – please feel free to contact us again should you require any further assistance.

      All the best,
      The Owatrol Team

      Hi Mark,

We’re sorry that you’ve had a negative experience using Dilunett. We would say that Dilunett can take up to 24 hours of working time to remove ome tougher coatings and varnishes and we would always recommend performing a touch test initially to ascertain the working time for your coating. Its performance in your case would be dependent on your specific coating you wanted to remove and how long you left it on for before rinsing.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance,
      The Owatrol Team

NOT WORTH THE MONEY. DIDN’T EVEN REMOVE ONE (1) LAYER OF POLYURETHANE VARNISH.

      Owatrol Team

      Hi Frank,

We’re sorry that you have had a negative experience with Owatrol products. Unfortunately Dilunett will not remove polyurethane varnish, it states this clearly in the Product Information Sheet (TDS) which we do recommend all customers to read prior to use. However, considering your experience we have now added these restrictions to the product information in a warning box to make it clear for customers. We would recommend trying DSP 800 for removing polyurethane varnish and will send you a sample pot for free to try out.

      Kind regards,
      The Owatrol Team

Not as delighted as expected. Glad it was not solvent based, like Nitromorse. It didn’t cut through the 3 coats of varnish on my decking properly, but was sufficient. Maybe I didn’t allow enough time.

Having already cleaned my decking, I purchased this product to remove the remaining decking stain. It removed the majority of the stain, but there is still residue on the boards, which is evident now that I have oiled the deck with a natural coloured oil.
