Owatrol Solid Colour Stain (SCS) is an opaque protection and finish designed for use on masonry as well as both new and weathered exterior wood surfaces. It contains Owatrol’s Emulsa-Bond, giving it excellent adherence without the need for lengthy preparation and priming. This is unrivalled by other available products.

For use as a masonry paint, we recommend using SCS over other products on the market due to the stabilising solution it has. Many other masonry paint products require you to stabilise the surface before the paint can be applied, which can require extensive preparation and priming. However, due to SCS having Emulsa-Bond (a mix in bonding primer) built into it, this step is negated – meaning you can just get on with the job at hand.

Why should I use SCS?

The primary reason for using SCS is simply that there’s nothing else as good on the market. SCS is guaranteed for 15 years on vertical surfaces and 5 years on horizontal surfaces. The most notable quality of SCS is that it will not flake or peel! Not only can SCS be used on new, old and previously coated external wood surfaces but it protects as well as finishes. It provides lasting protection against moisture and has excellent adhesion and flexibility of the film.

SCS is perfect for delivering long-lasting beauty on sidings and cladding, hard-wearing consistency on fencing and high-traffic performance on decks, docks and other horizontal surfaces. You can use SCS on softwood, hardwood, tropical wood and thermo-heated wood surfaces. You can even use SCS on weathered vertical masonry including stucco, painted block and EIFS. It’s excellent for use on outdoor furniture and the wide range of available shades means you can create a unique style for your garden.

Colours

Owatrol Solid Colour Stain (SCS) is available in 1, 2.5, 10 & 20 litre containers and in 35 different shades. You can also purchase a sample pot to help you to decide on colours.

Always read the Solid Colour Stain Technical Data Sheet before using and follow the instructions carefully.

Surface Preparation

Exterior masonry surfaces

Before using SCS, all masonry surfaces must be clean, dust-free and free of any loose material. We recommend using a stripper such as DSP 800, which is perfect for the removal of all coating types. You must ensure that all previous coatings are removed before using SCS, otherwise, it will not penetrate properly and you will not gain your desired finish.

New wood surfaces

Before using SCS, all surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease and mildew. However, if your wood is new it will also have a hard shiny surface known as mill glaze which prevents maximum penetration – preventing any coating from adhering properly. We would always recommend new wood is treated with Seasonite new wood protection and then allowed to weather for a minimum of 6 months after which time Solid Colour Stain can be applied following the instructions for weathered wood.

Weathered wood surfaces

Untreated wood surfaces which have weathered for 6 months or more need a thorough cleaning to restore their original colour and remove any built-up dirt before applying SCS. To do this simply use Net-Trol wood cleaner which is scrubbed on, left to work and then rinsed off. Be sure to allow your wood to dry thoroughly for 48 hours afterwards before applying Solid Colour Stain.

Previously coated surfaces

In this case, first sand or scrape to remove any loose, flaking or peeling finish (if there is any). If necessary, you should strip the surface with Dilunett Gel and then neutralise it with Net-Trol wood cleaner. Then allow 48 hours for the surface to dry before applying SCS.

Applying Owatrol’s Solid Colour Stain

Owatrol’s Solid Colour Stain is incredibly easy to apply by following these simple instructions. First, apply a coat of SCS avoiding heavy application. Next, allow this coat to dry for 3-4 hours before applying a second coat. If applying by spray, always back-brush or back-roll immediately after application to ensure uniformity of colour, coverage and penetration.

Maintenance

Surfaces with harsh exposure to weather or traffic will wear more quickly than other areas. In these cases, clean or brush affected areas (with Net-Trol for wood) and recoat as necessary.

Clean Up

Clean all tools and equipment with soap and water whilst still wet. If allowed to dry, remove with paint stripper.

Rags soaked in this product should be soaked with water before disposing of with household waste.

Please Note: Woods high in tannins e.g. Cedar, Ipe, Oak, Teak will darken when treated with Aquanett, Prepdeck or Dilunett. Neutralising with Net-Trol immediately after rinsing will lighten and restore the woods colour.

It is imperative that a contact time test is done when using Aquanett, Prepdeck or Dilunett on Oak, Chestnut and other high tannin content woods to avoid blackening the wood – Refer to the relevant TDS.

Things to Remember

  • Before starting your project on wood surfaces, test penetration and absorbency by sprinkling water lightly onto the wood. If the water is absorbed rapidly, surface is free of contamination and ready for staining. If water is repelled, thorough preparation, as for new wood must be performed.
  • Before starting application, test the colour choice on a small area and allow to dry to determine final colour.
  • Purchase sufficient product for the whole job and mix all product together before starting to avoid colour variances.
  • Cover everything you do not wish to coat, including plants and shrubs.
  • Apply between 10°C and 35°C.
  • Do not apply in direct sunlight, on hot surfaces.
  • Do not apply if cold and/or wet weather is expected within 48 hours.
  • Mix product thoroughly before and during application. Do not thin.
  • For wood, always work the entire length of a deck board or horizontal siding to a logical break, such as a window or door frame.
  • Vertical siding should be coated from top to bottom.
  • If using an airless sprayer it should be (.017-.021 tip at 1800-2000 psi (124-138 bars))

I LOVE these products, I first came across them living for nearly 15 years in Sweden from 1999. I was introduced to them by the local paint store and used the Swedish Red on all my out houses and sheds, others painted once every other year, I painted once and left in 2014 – the sheds looked great still.

I also did the wooden parts of the house and used once the E-B solution primer added to some masonry paint I had and wanted to use on wood paneling, it was a great success.

Now back in the West Country I have bought a timber building – originally Swedish 1950’s , painted first with a cream paint which obviously lasted long. I found out it was believed to be Owatrol! Then the buildings were painted with a brown yukky stain – which has stayed on all this time being replenished from time to time. I wanted to paint it and had one can of Slate Blue solid colour – YIPPEE it’s the perfect colour to do my house. I found a small independent paint store about 30 mins away and hey presto they had some cans OF …………….. SLATE BLUE!
I’ve started June 2017 – BUT I know I won’t have enough so will have to perhaps decide to paint one of the gable end walls with another colour UNLESS I can find some slate blue ???????
Is there any anywhere? I’ve searched the internet high and low through many pages, tried ebay, marketplace and preloved sites….. I’m happy with half cans too and will pay courier charges.

Failing that does anyone have any idea what is the closest colour to the Slate Blue 303 – so I could maybe use that on my end walls instead?

Looking forward to a positive response 🙂

      Hi there!

It’s great that you’re such a fan of Owatrol products and you certainly seem to be working hard to keep using them – I’m pleased to say we can definitely be of help here. Slate Blue – 303 has not been discontinued, it is just now called ‘Blue’ but is the same 303 we have just changed the name as we have adapted the colour range of our 3 opaque finished to be the same. You can purchase ‘Blue’ in Solid Colour Stain, Shed & Fence Paint or Decking Paint and they should all be the same colour as the ‘Slate Blue’ you have already. If you’re uncertain we’d recommend purchasing a sample pot first.

      Hope this helps,
      The Owatrol Team

Purchased a sample tin in deep mahogany to stain the front door step. Goes on very easily and gave a perfect, even coverage after just one coat. Have applied a second coat and the finish is superb. The colour on immediate application is paler than the colour swatch on the website but within a minute or so the colour darkens to a rich mahogany that is exactly as shown on the swatch. Rainwater is repelled effectively and time will tell how the stain holds up over the coming months / years. I have used other Owatrol products which have always lived up to my expectations and have no doubt that this solid colur stain will be just as good. Also great service from Owatrol direct.

I had some “problem areas” on my Smart Garden Office due to four years of full sun that had caused some hairline cracking and knot movement. This stuff is expensive, more so than almost any other product I looked at, but the Smart Garden people recommend it. And now I see why. Excellent application, easy to work with, very good coverage and it has resealed and repaired the surface that now looks like new. Worth the money? So far so good. Ask me again in a few years, but I am confident.

Brilliant service, arrived as promised, safe and secure. Large area to cover but I was lucky with the weather. Easy to apply and although very early days I’m delighted with the results. One question for you, will it adhere to garden plastic seating as I’d love to give new life to some fading old faithfuls?. I look forward to many years of not screaming with despair every March when I viewed the havoc winter had reaked to my decking.

Hi Carrie, we’re so glad you’re happy with Solid Colour Stain. Unfortunately no you can’t use it on plastic seating, however you could use Owatrol Deco, our multi surface paint for this purpose.
      Many thanks,

Fantastic paint but the tin design is such that the lid bends up and its really hard to open (especially second time once the first coat has dried, I now have three parts of an expensive tin of paint left that I can’t get into – very frustrating!

We have an old red cedar summerhouse on which the previous surface treatment looked very shabby (where it still adhered). Two or three coats of your solid colour have made a tremendous difference. Although expensive compared with the stuff you can buy in huge tubs from the main DIY stores, Owatrol solid colour coating feels very reassuring to apply. It has an opacity which is far superior. I am looking forward to admiring, and not painting, the summerhouse for many years to come. I will never touch the cheap stuff again.

Just a note to add to my previous review. I was out this morning brushing my (now!) awesome looking decks and I noticed 2 beautiful butterflies perched on one of the adirondacks -the one I painted with Island Breeze and Birchwood stripes! They were attracted to the Birchwood colour- not the Island breeze nor Sea Foam ( another identical chair). So I’m conducting an experiment….I’ve painted the outside of the butterfly house in Sea Foam and used Birchwood on the 8 perches. Hopefully this will attract the butterflies into their house for the winter months of hibernation. Either way the butterfly house looks stunning and I have peace of mind in knowing I won’t need to stain it again for a few years! I must say I love this product and only wish I had discovered it sooner! Many thanks Owatrol

Like others before I have faithfully redone my decking and benches each year with a famous high street colour stain -and exh year it all needs redoing. So this year I have scrapped off all the old treatments and used Owatrol Solid stain on my decks. It wasn’t easy trying to guage when to use the stain and avoid any forecast showers! But I applied the first coat and later a second coat. And I have to say it looks awesome! Subsequent rain has simply run off the deck and little birdie messes have cleaned off easily so I’m very happy. I also used sample pots to paint 2 adirondack chairs + footstools and what a difference. Coverage varies-I found the lighter shades need at least 3 coats to get a clean solid finish. My decks were done with Mallard Green (lovely sage colour) and they only needed 2 coats. I love this stain so much I’ve recommended it to my friends , family and even my beatuician!! Brilliant stuff!

We’ve used Owatrol on our garden shed and on our decking. It’s easy to use and a massive improvement on usual wood stain treatments that seem to last just one season. We wouldn’t use anything else now.

Got to agree with the above. We live in the firing line from all the weather coming up from the Atlantic up Loch Linnhe. Initially I applied a rival stain beginning with But (expensive) to our raw larch logs forming our curved porch. It disappeared within the year. I used the Solid Colour Stain and it is brilliant. It flexes really well with the wood, shrugs off the weather, and I have just had to recoat it after maybe 7 years. I have used it on the cladding on our workshop, garage, dormers, turbine house, metal doors, concrete steps etc, it just seems to stick to everything with little prep. Fantastic stuff.
