Prepdeck Biobased is 90% bio-based wood stripper & cleaner specially designed for the removal of old solid and semi-transparent stains, unsightly grade stamps and other finishes from wood.
Its biobased formulation, partly derived from renewable raw materials, combines efficiency with a reduced environmental footprint, making it an eco-responsible alternative to conventional strippers.
Essentially a four-in-one product, its main purpose (when used undiluted), is as an effective way to prepare a wooden surface for further treatment. Stripping away existing finishes along with stains, marks and grade stamps.
When used diluted, Prepdeck Biobased can also reduce mill glaze on new wood and prepare the surface to accept a penetrative finish. It can also be used as a powerful wood cleaner with the ability to get rid of even the most difficult marks and stains.
Ideal uses for Prepdeck Biobased
- Prepdeck Biobased can be used on softwoods, hardwoods and even modified woods, such as thermowood or kebony.
- Biobased composition: reduces dependence on fossil resources.
- Ideal for use on garden decks, fences, cladding and garden furniture.
- Perfect for the removal of stains, finishes and wood grade stamps.
- Great for the removal of mill glaze on new wood – allowing for the best finish possible.
Surface Preparation
- Remove any loose and flaking finish.
- Brush off any physical surface contamination i.e. moss, general dirt etc.
Application Tools
- Synthetic brush
- Roller with synthetic cover
- Garden Spray
- Synthetic scrubbing brush
Dilutions
To remove grade stamps:
Use undiluted.
To reduce mill glaze:
- Hardwood e.g Ipe, Teak, Balau etc: 1 part Prepdeck Biobased to 3 parts water
- Softwood e.g Cedar, PTW, Pine etc: 1 part Prepdeck Biobased to 5 parts water
To clean:
Dilute 1 part Prepdeck Biobased to 4 parts water, up to a maximum of 1 part Prepdeck Biobased to 10 parts water, depending on condition of the surface being cleaned.
To strip:
Alkyd and acrylic stains, new oil:
Use undiluted
Old oil finishes:
1 part Prepdeck Biobased to 3 parts water
Application
- Shake or stir product well before and during use including diluted solutions.
- Use Prepdeck Biobased as is or dilute according to “Dilutions” above. Keep surface wet with Prepdeck Biobased while it is working.
- After rinsing ALWAYS neutralise surface with Net-trol except where Tropitech is the chosen finish (see “After stripping/cleaning”). Do not use a wire brush to scrub the surface.
- Work large areas in zones.
- Allow wood to dry thoroughly, 2-3 days before refinishing.
Test Procedure
- Apply Prepdeck Biobased and allow to work for 20 minutes.
- Scrub the surface to see if the finish or dirt is lifting.
- If it is lifting well, commence with the job. If not, wait a further 10 minutes.
- Test again and continue testing in this way every 10 minutes up to a maximum work time of 2 hours for stripping and 30 minutes for cleaning.
Note:
Care should be taken when using Prepdeck Biobased to strip a coating on high tannic woods e.g Ipe, Teak, Balau, Cedar, Oak for longer than 1 hour, to avoid permanently darkening the wood. It is better to conduct 2 strips with a shorter working time e.g 30 mins and neutralisation in between, rather than conducting 1 long working time.
Stripping
- Work in areas that can be completed in 30 minutes.
- Apply a generous application of Prepdeck Biobased to the area to be stripped and allow to work.
- After time conducted during your test procedure has elapsed, test a small area with nylon scrubbing brush to see if finish or dirt is lifting.
- If lifting, scrub area with a stiff nylon brush, deck brush or use a Power Washer at 725-1450 psi (50-100 bars) depending on type of wood.
- Always work in direction of grain.
- Rinse with copious amounts of freshwater, using the highest pressure from the water source available, working in the direction of the grain. Rinse adjacent areas at same time.
NB: The use of hot water makes the job easier.
Depending on the condition and thickness of the coating, more than one application may be required to remove the finish. Any areas of stubborn finish may be spot treated. Allow wood to become damp. Apply Predeck Biobased and allow to work for a short period of time.
Cleaning
- Stir or shake diluted Prepdeck Biobased regularly during use.
- Apply diluted Prepdeck Biobased and allow to work for 15-20 minutes.
- Scrub surface whilst rinsing with water at the same time (alternatively use a pressure washer at 725-1450 psi (50-100 bars)).
Reducing Mill Glaze
- Stir or shake diluted Prepdeck Biobased regularly during use.
- Apply Prepdeck to the area to be treated and leave to work:
- Exotic hardwoods: 20-25 mins – some species such as ipe may require 2 applications
- Soft & broadleaved hardwoods: 15-20 mins
- Scrub area with a stiff nylon brush, deck brush or use a Power Washer at at 725-1450 psi (50-100 bars) depending on type of wood.
- Always work in direction of grain. Rinse adjacent areas at same time
Removing Grade Stamps.
- Apply Prepdeck Biobased undiluted and scrub until stamp is gone.
- Rinse thoroughly.
After Stripping / Cleaning
Always neutralise the surface immediately after application with Net-Trol to neutralise the surface and restore the colour, except where Tropitech is the chosen finish. If Tropitech is the chosen finish, lighten wood with a 1 part bleach to 3 parts water solution.
Restrictions
- Prepdeck Biobased will not remove the following types of coatings 2 pack or baked on paints: Polyurethane paint and varnish.
- Do not use on aluminium.
- Due to the grain structure, high tannin content and risk of permanently darkening the wood, do not sure Predeck Biobased on Oak or Chestnut prior to contacting us for additional information and advice.
Clean up
All that is required for clean up is water.
Things to remember
- Always carry out a preliminary test prior to commencing the job, to determine the contact time necessary for stripping or cleaning the wood.
- Wear chemical resistant gloves, safety goggles and protective clothing.
- For best results, do not let Predeck Biobased work for longer on the wood than is necessary to remove the finish / clean it.
- Hardwoods including exotic hardwoods and woods rich in tannins such as Cedar, Oak, Teak, Ipe etc may darken with Prepdeck.
- Where Prepdeck Biobased has darkened the wood DO NOT allow it to dry, prior to using Net-Trol or a 1 part bleach to 3 parts water solution (see “After stripping/cleaning”).
- Cover and protect everything you do not wish to strip or clean, including plants, shrubs and any aluminium surfaces.
- When stripping vertical surfaces, work from bottom to top to avoid streaking.
- Apply between 5°C and 35°C.
- Do not apply in direct sunlight or on a hot surface.
- Do not allow Prepdeck Biobased to dry on the surface. If drying occurs dampen with a mist application of water.
