Deks Olje D1 protects 10th floor London deck

Exterior Solutions Ltd are delighted with Owatrol and are showcasing the consistent and effective results that can be achieved with Owatrol’s Deks Olje D1 hardwood saturating oil. A client of theirs has 240 square metres of Exterpark Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) deck. It needs to be best kept all year round, very much in keeping with the bronze trim. How to strip and prepare the decking

First the team at Exterior Solutions Ltd. used Prepdeck to strip the deck. To do this they applied the Prepdeck (undiluted) and allowed it to work. After an appropriate time they scrubbed a small area to see if the coatings were lifting. They then scrubbed the area with a deck brush in the direction of the grain and rinsed with water.

With such a large area it was particularly important to work in stages, stripping areas which could be completed in 15-30 minutes. After using Prepdeck it is imperative that you neutralise the wood with Net-Trol to prevent the Prepdeck from stripping the new finish as it may otherwise remain active in the wood.

To do this was a simple process, Exterior Solutions Ltd. simply applied the Net-Trol to the wood with a brush whilst the surface was wet. They left the Net-Trol to work for 10-20 minutes and then rinsed whilst scrubbing in the direction of the grain. Again they needed to work in sections and kept the wood wet. You can lightly spray it with a mist application of water if necessary to keep it wet. Exterior Solutions Ltd. now left the wood to dry for several days before applying the finish. It’s very important that wood is as dry as possible before applying a new finish. Coatings should not be applied if wet weather is expected.

How to apply Deks Olje D1 hardwood saturating oil

Exterior Solutions Ltd. chose Deks Olje D1 saturating hardwood oil as they needed a natural look which enhanced the wood’s beauty but also needed protection from the damaging effects of UV rays. As the project was a 10th floor London terrace deck it would be subject to a lot of sunlight. This makes Deks Olje D1 perfect for the job. For even more longevity you could choose D1 Pro.

To apply the Deks Olje D1 the team at Exterior Solutions applied coats of D1 ‘wet-on-wet’. This means that as soon as one coat was absorbed by the wood they applied the next. They continued until the timber stopped absorbing the oil so they knew it was saturated and then they wiped away any excess to avoid shiny spots. Deks Olje D1 is a saturating wood oil so its place is inside the timber, not on the surface. Once dry, it prevents moisture from entering the pores of the wood as it is already saturated with oil.
