The sculpture is a 40-foot tall installation that consists of metallic structures, pipes and staircases. It has a range of domestic elements and appliances including a kitchen and toilets.

Atelier Van Lieshout has created a fictional world for this piece named, ‘New Tribal Labyrinth’. The world consists of metal workers and their desire to return to an industrial age with simple products, social cohesion and the origins of wealth design and culture which have created a home inside of the ‘Blast Furnace’.

Blast Furnace stems from AVL’s project New Tribal Labyrinth, which reflects on society’s dependence on a complex, globalised economy. The project focuses on the pillars of an alternative society inhabited by imaginary tribes: farming, industry and ritual objects.

We asked AVL a few questions about their experience using Owatrol Oil on this fantastic project.

Where did AVL hear about Owatrol?
Our head of design uses Owatrol Oil to maintain his ship and has subsequently taken it to the workshop.

How was Owatrol Oil used in the project?
It was diluted, put into a high pressurised spraying system and then used to cover the steel artwork.

How much did you use?
We ordered 30 litres for the project.

How long did it take you to apply the Owatrol Oil?
The job was done in approximately 10 minutes!

Why use Owatrol Oil?

Owatrol Oil is a highly penetrating rust inhibiting oil. It is perfect for use on new or rusted metal and provides a tough, flexible finish.

When used on rusted surfaces, it drives out excess moisture and air from within, stabilising the metal and protecting it from further rusting.

About the artist

Atelier Van Lieshout is the studio founded by sculptor, painter and visionary Joep van Lieshout. After graduating at the Rotterdam Art Academy Van Lieshout quickly rose to fame with projects that travelled between the world of easy-clean design and the non-functional area of art: sculpture and installations, buildings and furniture, utopias and dystopias.

In 1995, Van Lieshout founded his studio and has been working solely under the studio’s name ever since. The studio moniker exists in Van Lieshout’s practice as a methodology toward undermining the myth of the artistic genius.

Over the past three decades, Van Lieshout has established a multidisciplinary practise that produces works on the borders between art, design, and architecture. By investigating the thin line between manufacturing art and mass-producing functional objects, he seeks to find the boundaries between fantasy and function, between fertility and destruction.

Van Lieshout combines an imaginative aesthetic and ethic with a spirit of entrepreneurship; his work has motivated movements in the fields of architecture and ecology, and has been internationally celebrated, exhibited, and published.

Thank you for using Owatrol Oil on your art Joep van Lieshout, we wish you all the very best with your art in the future.
