Which Owatrol metal protection product do I need?

We know that metal protection in particular is a minefield of different but similar products and it can be a challenge to work out which is best for your project. Hopefully this guide will give you a better understanding of the Owatrol metal range and how to use our various solutions. This is, however, meant as a guide only and you should refer to the product pages for specific information and full application instructions.

Ferrous Metals (e.g. cast iron, steel, iron)

New SurfacesLightly Rusted SurfacesHeavily Rusted SurfacesSurfaces coated with an alkyd paint in poor condition
Finishing with a Single Pack Paint– Clean surface to remove any contamination – oil, grease, etc.
– Primer AP.60 (re-coat 24-48 hours)
– Finish with Owatrol Deco, RA.85 or any oil or alkyd based paint**
– Primer AP.60 (re-coat 24-48 hours)
– Finish with Owatrol Deco, RA.85 or any oil or alkyd based paint**
– Wire brush
– Apply a saturating coat of Owatrol Oil (drying 48 hours)
– Primer AP.60 (re-coat 24-48 hours)
– Finish with Owatrol Deco, RA.85 or any oil or alkyd based paint**
– Remove with Dilunett*
– Apply a saturating coat of Owatrol Oil (drying 48 hours)
– Primer AP.60 (re-coat 24-48 hours)
– Finish with Owatrol Deco, RA.85 or any oil or alkyd based paint**
Finishing with a 2 Pack Paint*– Clean surface to remove any contamination – oil, grease, etc.- C.I.P. (drying 72 hours)
– Finish with epoxy, antifouling, polyurethane, chlorinated rubber, etc.
– C.I.P. (drying 72 hours)
– Finish with epoxy, antifouling, polyurethane, chlorinated rubber, etc.
– Wire brush
– C.I.P. (drying 72 hours)
– Apply a 2nd coat of C.I.P. (drying 72 hours)
– Finish with epoxy, antifouling, polyurethane, chlorinated rubber, etc.
– Remove with Dilunett*
– C.I.P. (drying 72 hours)
– Apply a 2nd coat of C.I.P. (drying 72 hours)
– Finish with epoxy, antifouling, polyurethane, chlorinated rubber, etc.
Natural Rust Finish– Wire brush
– Apply a saturating coat of Owatrol Oil (drying 48 hours)
– Finish with Deks Olje D.2 for a high gloss finish or oil/alkyd based varnish

* On Aluminium or for 2 pack finishes, use the appropriate remover.
**Use Owatrol Oil paint additive (for the first coat, add 1 part Owatrol Oil to 4 parts of any oil or alkyd based paint).

Non-Ferrous Metals & Stainless Steels (e.g. galvanised**, aluminium, zinc**)

Chrome or anodised
Finishing with a Single Pack Paint– Clean surface to remove any contamination – oil, grease, etc.

– C.I.P. (drying 72 hours)
– Finish with epoxy, polyurethane, chlorinated rubber, antifouling, etc.
– Apply a saturating coat of Owatrol Oil (drying 48 hours)
– C.I.P. (drying 72 hours)
– Finish with epoxy, polyurethane, chlorinated rubber, antifouling, etc.
– Remove with Dilunett*- Apply a saturating coat of Owatrol Oil (drying 48 hours)
– C.I.P. (drying 72 hours)
– Finish with epoxy, polyurethane, chlorinated rubber, antifouling, etc.
Finish: Restore and protect the gloss finish on the surface – Clean surface to remove any contamination – oil, grease, etc.
– Polytrol
– Wipe with a dry cloth after 15 mins (max)

* On aluminium or for 2 pack finishes, use the appropriate remover.
** No polishing required.
***Polished metal: bronze, copper, inoxidisable steel, brass – anodised metals : aluminium.
**** Use Owatrol Oil paint additive (for the first coat, add 1 part Owatrol Oil to 4 parts of any oil or alkyd based paint).

  1. having a old cast iron toilet cistern sand blasted and am looking for a clear coat to prevent corrosion from building up on inside but keep the look of the raw cast iron, I would be grateful for any info regarding my query.
