AP60

Anti-corrosive matt finish primer for new or rusted surfaces

AP60 packaging
  • For the protection of new or rusted surfaces
  • Creates a sound, stable layer for adhesion of a new finish
  • Suitable primer for woods, plastics, glass, ferrous metals and more
  • Can be overcoated with any oil or alkyd based finish
  • Ideal for protection of cars chassis and roofs composed of fibrous cement

Owatrol AP60 is an anti-corrosive primer for protecting both new and old rusted surfaces. It penetrates to below the residual rust, saturating it, and seals the underlying sound surface to form a stable layer. This gives exceptional protection against corrosion and weathering and creates a strong, stable layer for other finishes to adhere to. AP60 can be overcoated with any single pack paint or can be left unfinished in one of the 4 available colours. It uses Owatrol Oil alongside pigments and resins picked specifically for their anti-corrosive properties.

AP60 is suitable for use on all types of surface – as well as metal it can be used on plastics, wood, fibrous cement and more.

Galvanised surfaces do not require pickling prior to use. In addition, AP60 can also be used on brand new metal, adhering exceptionally well to clean, bright steel.

It is perfect for use on automotive parts, fibrous cement roofs, machinery, steel structures, fences, railings, guttering and more.

Ideal Uses for AP60

  • Perfect for preventing rust on fencing, railing, gates and guttering
  • Providing long-term protection for machinery and automotive parts
  • Guarding against the effect of weathering on steel structures and fibrous cement roofs
  • Forms a sound surface on plastic and wood surfaces for other finishes to adhere to
  • Suitable for horizontal and vertical surfaces
  • Adheres well to clean, bright steel

Always read the AP60 Technical Data Sheet before using and follow the instructions carefully.

Surface Preparation

First clean and dry all surfaces to remove oil, grease and other contaminants. Then remove all mill scale, loose and flaking rust and old paint to create a sound surface and edge and then feather in any sharp edges. Surfaces which have been exposed to chemicals should be washed using lots of water or steam cleaned. Severely contaminated surfaces should be cleaned using an appropriate solvent.

Application tools

  • Brush
  • Roller
  • Airless Sprayer (0.4 mm x 80Ëš @ 1860 – 2000 psi (128 – 138 bars))

Application

 New Surfaces

  • Prime with 1 coat of Owatrol AP60.
  • For surfaces in aggressive climatic conditions apply a 2nd coat.

Clean, Lightly Rusted or New Unpainted Rusty Steel

  • Apply 2 coats of Owatrol AP60 allowing the recommended drying time between coats.

Heavily Rusted Surfaces

  • Apply 2 coats of Owatrol AP60 allowing the recommended drying time between coats.
  • Add 5-20% Owatrol Oil to the first coat of AP60 depending on the severity of the rust.

Previously Coated Surfaces

  • Spot prime any exposed metal with Owatrol Oil or 1 coat of AP60 depending on the severity of the rust and allow to dry.
  • Follow with 1 or 2 coats of AP60 allowing the recommended drying time between coats.

Clean Up

Clean all tools and equipment with white spirit while still wet. If allowed to dry, remove with paint stripper. Store and maintain equipment as directed by manufacturer.

NOTE: Any rags, steel wool etc. soaked in Owatrol AP60 may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. These must be saturated with water after use or placed in a sealed, water-filled metal container, before disposing with household waste.

Things to Remember

  • Cover everything you do not wish to paint.
  • Apply between 5ËšC – 35ËšC.
  • Do not apply AP60 in direct sunlight or on to hot surfaces.
  • When spraying add 5-20% Owatrol Oil if required, to bring it to the desired viscosity.
  • Stir can well before and during use and do not thin.
  • If applying by airless sprayer it should be 0.4 mm x 80Ëš @ 1860 – 2000 psi (128 – 138 bars)

Restrictions

Do not overcoat Owatrol AP60 with paints containing hot solvents i.e. Xylene, fast-drying enamels, 2 pack epoxies etc.
