How to save money on paint

As much as we all love a freshly decorated project, it can be expensive. So today we want to share some of  our top tips on how to save money on paint so you can have the room, deck, shed or fence of your dreams for less!

There are a wide variety of things you can do to save money on paint. Some are free to use, such as our coverage calculator, and others may seem to add to the cost, but are actually a lot better and cheaper for you in the long run.

  • Paint conditioners such as Floetrol or Owatrol Oil
  • Coverage calculator
  • High-quality paint

  • Check local groups
  • Consider painting an accent wall

Floetrol or Owatrol Oil

Floetrol with Owatrol OilOne of the best ways to save money on paint is by using a paint conditioner such as Owatrol Floetrol or Owatrol Oil. If you are using a water-based paint you would need to use Floetrol and if you are using an oil-based paint you would need to use Owatrol Oil.

Simply adding some paint conditioner to your paint will improve the flow and workability of it. This means that you can maintain the ‘wet edge’ for longer, allowing the paint to go further. Another excellent thing that a paint conditioner does is significantly reduce brush and roller marks. This creates a much more professional looking finish.

As paint conditioners give the paint a better viscosity, they make painting that is being carried out in more extreme cold, hot and windy conditions easier to do. Unlike the use of damaging paint thinners, they do all this without altering the inherent qualities or the finish of the paint.

Coverage calculator

We have a new and improved coverage calculator which you can find on all our paints and finishes pages to help assist you in purchasing the right amount first time. There’s nothing more frustrating than purchasing way more paint than you need!

Simply enter the width and height of the surface that you wish you paint (in metric or imperial) and our handy calculator will estimate how much you will need for your project and which product sizes we recommend.

High-quality paint

Although, when talking about saving money, it may seem counter-intuitive to recommend using high-quality paint instead of a budget one, there is a good reason. You will usually find that very cheap or budget paints tend to peel and flake in a very short amount of time. This is usually because they do not have good qualities to bind to the surface.

When using a budget paint, you will usually find yourself having to do multiple coats to get the right opacity. So not only will you end up using more paint in the first place, the application will take a lot longer and you will usually find yourself having to repaint in 12 months due to the paint failing!

When painting outside, it really pays to use high-quality paint such as Decking Paint or Owatrol Deco. This is because Decking Paint is fortified with E-B (Emulsa-Bond) – our mix-in bonding primer and Owatrol Deco are fortified with Owatrol Oil to condition the paint and aid with adhesion.
