“Ugly House to Lovely House – with George Clarke”, is a weekly show that is currently airing in the UK on Wednesdays at 8pm on Channel 4. We are very excited to say that one of our products, Decking Paint, has been featured on the show!

Decking completed with Decking Paint

Sally and Martijn from Bournemouth were having a few areas of their house re-constructed. Not least because they needed extra space as they had a baby on the way! A part of their project was to have a deck installed, so their new open plan kitchen, diner and living room would continue out through their large glass doors and out onto a decking to really take in the outdoors.

The architect originally had quoted £45,000 for a terrace and decking, which was far too much, considering Sally and Martijn’s budget was £65,000 for the entire project. So, they decided to contact Karl Harrison at Exterior Solutions Ltd to get a different, but still absolutely beautiful deck. This deck was cleverly designed, was inside their budget and they didn’t need to compromise on quality or finish.

Decking specialist Karl Harrison of Exterior Solutions Ltd, decided to use Exterpark Magnet Decking in Accoya. He designed a beautiful ‘criss cross’ deck to help create ‘homes’ for specific garden items. Items such as the much loved BBQ and an area to sit back and relax with uninterrupted views across the valley.

With an unusual upside down house, Exterior Solutions Ltd had to create a high timber frame. This made for a great use of space, as just below them was home to large rocks and boulders. For obvious reason this was a very unused area of the garden!

When the decking was in place, it was then all finished with Owatrol’s Decking Paint, a premium, long lasting matt-opaque finish.

What is Owatrol Decking Paint?

Owatrol Decking Paint packagingOur Decking Paint is a premium finish suitable for use on new wood, weathered wood and even previously treated wood. It is fortified with Owatrol’s Emulsa-Bond (a water based bonding primer) helping it to provide unsurpassed adhesion. It is suitable for use on both horizontal and vertical surfaces and provides a rich matt finish perfect for decking.

The Decking Paint range has now been expanded and is available in 35 stylish colours. It is incredibly easy to use with just 2 coats needed in most cases. It provides long-lasting performance, even in high traffic areas like your garden decking. When applied correctly to bare wood, it’s guaranteed against peeling or flaking for 5 years on horizontal surfaces and 15 years on vertical surfaces.

We think it looks absolutely fantastic and we are so happy the customer loves the end result.

  1. Could you tell me which shade of grey this is in your photo for the channel 4 make over please? Could you tell me if I can apply to clean but previously stained decking please?

    1. Hi Ang,

According to the decking designers/installers website, the deck itself was finished in ‘Light Grey’ with the support posts finished with ‘black’ – https://exterior.supplies/accoya-decking-exterpark-magnet-system-ugly-house/

If your wood has been previously stained, this will need to be removed prior to application of Decking Paint. This is because Decking Paint works by saturating deep into the wood fibres. Having a stain or finish on the surface would result in a ‘barrier’ and so the Decking Paint would simply sit on the surface of the wood and would eventually peel and flake off.

As you mentioned the wood has a a stain, we would recommend using Prepdeck to remove it – https://www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/prepdeck/
After the wood has been treated with Prepdeck, you will then need to neutralise the wood with Net-Trol – https://www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/net-trol/ (this is an important step as it stops the active chemical in the stripper from continuing to work).
After these steps have been completed and the wood is completely dry, you can then apply the Decking Paint.

I hope this was helpful, please feel free to contact us again should you require any further assistance.

      All the best,
      The Owatrol Team

  2. We live in South facing property and our decking needs good paint would this work and last without peeling

    1. Hi there,

Owatrol Decking Paint is a premium paint that is fortified with our bonding primer Emulsa-Bond.
Decks with harsh exposure to weather or traffic will wear more quickly than other areas, but maintenance is easy as all you will need to do is clean the affected areas with Net-Trol and recoat as necessary.

Owatrol International warrants Decking Paint against peeling on wood decks for 5 years from the date of purchase if it is applied on bare wood to a properly prepared surface according to label directions – this means that all previous coatings must be properly removed before applying Decking Paint or the adhesion could be compromised.

I hope this was helpful, please feel free to give us a call on: 01582 592707 if you still have any questions.

      All the best,
      The Owatrol Team
