Gelcoat Restorer

Colour restorer for dull or faded surfaces including gelcoats

from 5 reviews
Gelcoat and surface restorer packaging
  • Restores the colour and appearance of dull and faded surfaces caused by exposure to sunlight, rain and pollution
  • Long lasting and penetrates deep into the gelcoat
  • Protects against corrosion and blemishes
  • Eliminates the need for waxes and polishes that sit on surfaces and dry out quickly
  • Suitable for use on fibreglass (GRP)

Gelcoat Restorer is a deep penetrating oil that penetrates deep into gelcoat to re-wet the pigment and so restore the dull, faded look of the gelcoat to its original colour and lustre. It then dries to a tough, long-lasting and flexible finish. Gelcoat Restorer eliminates the need for
expensive waxes and polishes that sit on the surface and dry out quickly.

Simple to apply using a cloth or soft brush, it’s ready to wipe off in just 10 minutes! It can be used on both horizontal and vertical surfaces and can even be used on fibreglass (GRP). Gelcoat Restorer dries to a tough and long-lasting flexible finish which does not leave a film – so it won’t peel or flake.

Ideal Uses for Gelcoat Restorer

  • Reviving the gelcoat on your boat
  • Restoring the shine to metal fixtures
  • Rejuvenating flat or chalky paint dulled by weathering
  • Brightening the surface of tiles in stone, terracota, marble, slate, etc.
  • Reviving the color of faded GRP surfaces

Restrictions

DO NOT use Gelcoat Restorer on white surfaces, it will not work as it is designed to restore pigments.

Always read the Gelcoat Restorer Product Information before using and follow the instructions carefully.

Surface Preparation

All surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, grime and mildew. All waxes, polishes, silicone etc. should be completely and thoroughly removed. Treat any mildew with a 50:50 bleach and water solution. Scrub the solution on to the surface and allow it to stand for 10-15 minutes then rinse thoroughly.

Clean the surface with warm soapy water or Deck Cleaner, rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry for a minimum of 24 hours depending on surface.

Application of Gelcoat Restorer

General directions

Always work in areas that can be completed 10-20 minutes to ensure an even appearance. If the surface absorbs the Gelcoat Restorer unevenly (i.e. some matt and some shiny patches) move any surplus oil from shiny areas to matt areas. Wipe off any excess Gelcoat Restorer with a lint-free cloth before it becomes tacky. For a shinier finish, buff the surface with a lint-free polishing cloth.

First, saturate a soft cloth with Gelcoat Restorer and wipe it on. With a soft cloth, wipe off any excess within 10 minutes. Next gently polish with a lint-free cloth to a new sheen.

Note: Gelcoat Restorer is not a surface coating. Its place is in the surface, not on top.

For application instructions for different uses of Gelcoat Restorer please see Polytrol.

Maintenance

Maintenance is due when a Gelcoat Restorer treated surface shows signs of fading. Prepare and re-treat surfaces as directed above.

Clean Up

Clean any tools used with white spirit. Gelcoat Restorer is non-flammable, however, any rags, steel wool etc. soaked in Gelcoat Restorer may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. Rags, steel wool etc must be saturated with water after use or placed in a sealed, water-filled metal container, before disposing of them with household waste. Rags may be laid flat and air-dried before discarding.

Things to Remember

  • Cover and protect everything you do not wish to treat.
  • Apply between +5°C and +35°C.
  • Do not apply in direct sunlight or on to hot surfaces.
  • Do not allow excess Gelcoat Restorer to dry and create a film on the surface (always remove excess product).
  • Do not use Gelcoat Restorer on white surfaces.

Applied to a test area as shown onto craftmaster painted steel barge, left for 12 minutes & wiped off, left a sticky matt residue which is worse than before, didnt appear to have soaked in at all, it was wet evenly all over start to finish.

      Hi Roy,

We are sorry that you had a negative experience with our Gelcoat Restorer – we would like to help you get to the bottom of this problem.
There are a few reasons as to why this may have happened; Was the surface cleaned before application? If so, please could I ask how it was cleaned? Also, how long was surface left before application of the Gelcoat Restorer?

      All the best,
      The Owatol Team

      Hi Neville,

I am sorry to hear you had a bad experience using Gelcoat Restorer.
It is most odd that it didn’t work for you – could I ask if you used it on a white surface? I only ask as Gelcoat restorer will not work on white surfaces.
Could you please send an email k.coniam@owatroluk.com so we can discuss this matter further?

      All the best,
      The Owatrol Team
