Polytrol used to restore colour to faded garage doors
This satisfied customer used Polytrol colour restorer to revive her faded powder coated aluminium garage doors that were installed in 1991. They were installed in 1991, but due to being South facing, had become badly faded. Not only that, they also had some staining around the locks from use of WD40.

Restoring a Faded Garden Trunk with Polytrol
Take a look and see how we restored a faded uPVC, rattan effect garden trunk that had become dull and grey after exposure to the elements. Using Polytrol, it was restored to its original deep black finish with no paint, no special tools, no mess and in no time at all.
What is Owatrol Polytrol?
Polytrol is our highly-penetrating, colour restoring oil that can be used on tarnished plastics, gelcoats, metals and other surfaces, to bring back the colour and lustre to dull or tarnished surfaces.
It works by penetrating deep into the substrate, re-wetting dried out pigments and restoring the surface’s lustre and colour that has been damaged by exposure to sunlight, rain and pollution. Also, when used on metal surfaces, Polytrol also gives long-term protection against corrosion.
Application of Polytrol
Polytrol is very quick and easy to apply and is a ‘wipe on, wipe off’ type of product:
- Begin by thoroughly cleaning the surface you wish to treat and allow it to fully dry.
- Next, apply Polytrol with a cloth or brush, working it into the surface. Be sure to work in areas which can be completed in 10-20 mins maximum, to ensure even coverage.
- Finally, wipe off the excess with a lint free cloth before it becomes tacky. Remember, Polytrol’s place is inside the surface, not a coating on top of it. For a shinier finish, buff the surface with a lint-free polishing cloth.

Hi,
We have a dark brown wood grain effect composite front door. It is around 12 years old and appears dirty/bleached where the sun gets to it. Inside it is still perfect. I have tried WD40 and car polishing cream (which normally sorts out scuffs on car bodywork), but this has either short term or no effect at all. Please advise.
Hi Barry,
Thank you for your query regarding your wood effect composite front door.
Polytrol would be perfect to restore the colour of your door and we actually have a blog post from a recent customer who did just that:
I hope the post is helpful and answers any question you may have.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us again if you require further assistance.

Hi.
I have a motorhome with a fibreglass ( GRP ) body wich is getting on for 18 years old.
The body has become dull – particularly the side facing the afternoon sun.
I have put a couple of photos here – https://www.flickr.com/photos/sueanddavid/40080884791/in/photostream/
Can you tell me if Polytrol ( or any other of your products ) would restore it to a shiny / glossy surface and re-vitalise the colours.
Regards
David
Hi David,
Thank you for your query regarding the use of Polytrol on your motorhome.
Polytrol can safely be used on fibreglass (GRP) however, in your case we do not recommend using it on the white sections. This is because Polytrol restores colour pigments so cannot be used on white surfaces.
However, Polytrol will work on the top green section but because it is such a pale colour we recommend you trying a sample on a small area first – This is to make sure the Polytrol is doing what you want it to before committing to a larger amount.
You can purchase a 100ml sample pot of Polytrol for £5 with free postage by following this link: https://www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/polytrol/ and selecting “sample” from the drop down menu.
I hope this was helpful – Please don’t hesitate to contact us again should you require further assistance.

Hi
I have grey upvc patio doors and the grey colouring is fading due to the sunlight and I wonder if Polytrol will restore the grey colour?
Many thanks Jacqueline
Hi Jacqueline,
Thank you for your query.
Polytrol can be used on your patio doors, however, we always like to recommend that customers try a sample size pot of Polytrol first and test it in a small area before committing to purchasing a larger amount.
Samples are available on our product page for £5 with free postage and packaging which you can find here; https://www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/polytrol/

I have a light oak composite front door which was installed some ten years ago by a company which has since gone bankrupt. The wood-grain effect has become a silvery grey colour and no amount of cleaning with soapy water will restore it. Will Polytrol be suitable for cleaning/restoring the door to its original condition and if so, being a standard size front door, what size tin of the product should I purchase. I live in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire and wonder if you could tell me if there are any local suppliers?
Many thanks,
Paul Wilmot
Hi Paul,
Polytrol should give good results in reviving your oak composite front door but we would always recommend purchasing a sample pot first to check which can only be purchased directly from our website but have free delivery. A 0.5L tin should provide plenty of product to treat your door.
Any further questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Many thanks,

Hi I have a blue BMW Z4. 2009. The rear bumper is colour matched but dull. Can you help?
Hi Rob,
Thank you for your query regarding the use of Polytrol on your car bumper.
Polytrol has been used with great success on both body work and bumpers, so it should work absolutely fine for your colour matched bumper too.
We always recommend to try a sample size first and to test it in a small area to make sure it will work for your particular project.
You can purchase a 100ml sample pot for £5 with free delivery here: https://www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/polytrol/

Hi. I have a grp sailing boat in a light blue colour. The whole thing has gone a chalky colour now. If I use polytrol I presume it would work ok but how long will it last and is it just a case of recoating again when it fades or have I got to get the old polytrol off first?
Hi Dave,
Thank you for your query about Polytrol.
Polytrol is perfectly suitable for use on grp. The amount of time it will stay looking bright and new sadly isn’t as easy to answer. It all depends on the amount of sun, UV rays, dirt, pollution etc that it is exposed to.
We would like to assume it would last around 12 months, but this is something that can easily be varied depending on the environment – it could last for less or longer than that.
When it comes to re-coating with Polytrol, the surface simply needs to be cleaned, left to dry and then re-applied as before.
I hope this answers your questions, if you still have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact us further.

Hello,
My 300 gallon green polyethylene water tank which is slightly sun-bleached on the top and one side. Will your Polytrol be safe and effective to restore it’s colour?
Thanks,
Frusa
Hi there Frusa,
Yes, Polytrol is perfectly safe and suitable for use on a polyethylene water tank. We would recommend purchasing a sample size of Polytrol: https://www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/polytrol/ (100ml for £7.50 with free delivery) and testing it out on the effected area.
I hope this is helpful – please don’t hesitate to contact us again if you have any further queries.
