How to restore dull or faded bumpers with Polytrol

Is your car looking older than it actually is? Sun damage and exposure to the British weather are the primary causes of that ‘chalky’ grey look that bumpers tend to inevitably get.

Whilst there are many options out there, Owatrol Polytrol is the leading colour restorer, as it penetrates deep inside the surface, to bring back the original colour, rather than creating a film that will sit on the surface and eventually fail.

At a glance: Why use Polytrol?

Restores, doesn’t mask: Penetrates into the plastic to re-wet dried-out pigments.

Long-term protection: Provides a shield against UV rays and rain and pollution.

Non-greasy: Dries to a smooth satin finish.

Multi-surface: Works on bumpers, trims, wing mirrors and even dull paintwork (where is also restores the shine and protects against corrosion).

Step-by-step guide: Restoring bumpers like a pro

To get the best results from your Owatrol Polytrol application, follow these 3 simple steps:

1. The surface prep

The secret to a long-lasting finish is a clean surface. Wash the bumper with warm soapy water to remove any contaminants such as dirt, grease, road salt etc.

It may be easier to use a degreaser, such as Pura-Trol.

Leave the bumper to completely dry, (usually 24 hours) as moisture will prevent the Polytrol from penetrating.

2. The application

Apply Polytrol using a soft brush or a lint-free cloth. In most cases you will see the deep black (or original colour) return almost instantly, as the oil saturates into the plastic.

Leave the product to work for around 10 minutes and at most 20 minutes.

4. The wipe-down

Using a new clean, dry, lint-free cloth, wipe away all excess Polytrol. This is the most important step for the best possible finish. Buffing after will also ensure a consistent, matt/satin result that will make your vehicle look like it just rolled off the showroom floor!

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Do not leave Polytrol for any longer than 20 minutes maximum and do not allow the product to dry out or become ‘tacky’ on the surface. This will result in further treatment to remove.

Frequently asked questions about Polytrol

  • How long does Polytrol last on bumpers?
A single application of Polytrol typically lasts around 12 months, depending on weather exposure and vehicle storage. It can be as little as 6 months for bumper exposed to high levels of UV and sea air, or as many as 24+ months.
  • Can I use Polytrol on metal or paint?
Yes! Polytrol is highly effective at restoring the shine to tarnished chrome, dull stainless steel and even faded gelcoats on boats or oxidised car paint. However, Polytrol must not be used on white surfaces as it is designed to restore pigments, which white is lacking.
  • Is there linseed or teak oil in Polytrol?
No, Polytrol does not contain any linseed or teak oil.
  • Is Polytrol safe to use internally, such as on dashboards etc.?
Polytrol can be used for internal purposes such as on dashboards. However, we recommend you apply it as early in the day as possible to give the area being treated as much time to air out as possible.
