wooden boat on lake finished in Deks Olje D1 and D2 by Jukka Kylmala

Finnish customer’s river boat the envy of his friends with D1 & D2

A Finnish Owatrol customer, Jukka Kylmälä, has sent us some great photographs of a project he recently completed using Deks Olje D1 saturating wood oil and Deks Olje D2 high gloss varnish which are both perfect for use in marine wood care applications.

His salmon-fishing river boat was in need of some protection. Jukka chose Owatrol solutions despite the most common practice in the area being to use a mixture of linseed oil, tar and some rot protection.

He knew that he could achieve a better finish with better and more long-lasting protection with Deks Olje.

What did he do first?

First Jukka applied Deks Olje D1 wet-on-wet until no more layers could be absorbed. This saturation is key to Deks Olje D1’s powerful protection as it protects from within the wood.

It feeds the wood to replace lost oils and drives out any moisture and air present in the wood.

This enriches and stabilises the wood to provide long-lasting protection to timber above and below the waterline. It does not form a film on the surface of the wood but protects from within so it will not peel or crack and gives a rich matt finish.

Jukka then applied 6 layers of Deks Olje D2, our high gloss varnish which gives a durable but flexible finish.

For a rich and luxurious look with the best longevity, it is applied in 6 thin layers. When used over a coating of Deks Olje D1, it will not peel or craze as water cannot get into the wood below.

Jukka was very satisfied with the results and his fishing colleagues were very impressed and curious. He went out to the Tornio River and received many questions from other boat owners regarding the products he used.

Another happy Owatrol customer!

  1. We have just finished the bulwarks and trim on a Bristol Channel cutter in D1. We like it a lot and wondered whether we could leave it as it is and re stain later in the coming years. D2 would be the other option but a lot more work and expense and we were really concerned about it peeling and then we would have to strip the wood again which is a massive undertaking. Can we leave in D1 with no problems.

    1. Hi Stewart,

You are absolutely fine to use Deks Olje D1 by itself. The wood will be protected from UV and moisture damage. It will gradually turn grey over the years, at which point you can give it a clean with Deck Cleaner and reapply the D1. We would recommend maintenance touch ups as and when required as well as reapplication as necessary but no sanding will be needed.

Please let us know if you need any further help.

  2. I have just purchased a Drascombe Dayboat. The trim is most likely Iroko. The
condition of the trim is fairly good with very few blemishes.

I was told that the treatment was either Burgess wax oil but this was changed to Deks Olje D1. Having read the instructions on the tin I am not sure if I should use the D1 direct, or to apply Deck Cleaner, then D1.

The other alternative is to strip to Bare wood then apply D1 as per instructions,
I am not too keen on this course if the deck cleaner would allow the D1 to be effective.

    Any advice

    1. Hi there Peter,

      Thank you for your query.

If the wood is weathered and untreated, we recommend you clean it with Net-Trol to remove the loose wood fibres, dirt and other surface contaminants. If the wood is severely contaminated, clean it with Aquanett and neutralise with Net-Trol.
All previous coatings such as paint, stain, varnish, waterproofers etc must be completely and thoroughly removed with Dilunett and stripped surfaces neutralised with Net-Trol before applying Deks Olje D1.
For previous oiled surfaces, all oils or sealers must be completely and thoroughly removed with Aquanett and stripped surfaces neutralised with Net-Trol, before applying Deks Olje D1.

Please find the following link to the Deks Olje D1 page:

If you click on the second tab “directions for use”, there is a lot of information in there that may be able to assist you further.

I hope this was helpful, please feel free to contact us again should you require any further assistance.

      All the best,

  3. Hi there, do you have any updated pics of this boat? We would love to see how well it’s lasted, and also have they done any maintenance coating.
