  1. Hello Owatrol
I am advising a client who is having a large pair of historic oak gates restored – they are about 4.5m high and each leaf is nearly 2m wide. The gates come from a historic house in Scotland and definitely date back to before 1830, so they are nearly 200 years old. The design includes diagonal latticework so there are lots of places where water can gather and penetrate if the wood is left unprotected – there is a lot of rot. The contractor is keeping as much of the original timber as possible but new oak frames are going to be provided all round as there is a need to ensure the gates are safe to operate. So after repair the gates will be made of a mixture of new oak and very old oak. All joins will be made as tight as possible but the gates are in an exposed position and the Scottish weather cannot be avoided. The gates have always been painted and so now we are looking for a durable paint system that will be as easy as possible to maintain for the restored gates – the idea being that neglect of maintenance in the past has caused a lot of the damage. In particular the owner will not have the resources in future to completely strip such large and complex gates for recoating with fresh paint so ideally we need a painted coating that does not need complete stripping as part of the essential maintenance routine. But at the same time we don’t want thick coats of paint that can crack and then retain water against the wood. Can you suggest a paint product in your range that would suit? The historic colour of the gates is a sort of pale milk chocolate or cappucino colour and that needs to continue. If you think one of your paint ranges would work for these gates, I would be interested in any advice you can offer and maybe a colour swatch too so that I can discuss coating options with the client and contractor in the next couple of months. Thanks, Will

    1. Hi Will,

      Thank you for your query.

This sounds like a fantastic project to work on and Owatrol will have a solution for you!

We would recommend using our Solid Colour Stain (SCS) to finish these gates. SCS is an opaque protection and finish designed for use on masonry as well as both new and weathered exterior wood surfaces.
It is available in 35 various shades and we also offer 100ml samples, so you can be sure you’re going to purchase the right colour for your project.
SCS also contains Owatrol’s Emulsa-Bond (our bonding primer) which gives it excellent adherence without the need for lengthy preparation and priming. This is something unrivalled by other available products.

Before applying SCS, it is very important that preparation of the wood is done correctly, as application to new wood and old wood requires different preparation work to be carried out.

For more information on SCS as well as directions for use, please click the following link: https://www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/solid-colour-stain/

If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us further.

      All the best,

    1. Hi there Julie,

We stock Aquadecks in the colour ‘Old Wood Grey’ which has the reference number you quoted of 554 which you can find here: https://www.owatroldirect.co.uk/product/aquadecks/

We also sell another product named Textrol that has a colour called ‘Weathered Grey’ but the reference number is not correct – I just wanted to make sure there was no confusion between this product and Aquadecks.

Please feel free to contact us should you require any further assistance.

      All the best,
      The Owatrol Team
