Our Traditional Stone Decking Paint is a premium finish suitable for use on new wood, weathered wood and even previously treated wood. The Decking Paint range has now been expanded and it is available in 35 stylish colours and is incredibly easy to use with just 2 coats needed in most cases. It provides long-lasting performance, even in high traffic areas like your garden decking and when applied correctly to bare wood is guaranteed against peeling or flaking for 5 years on horizontal surfaces such as decking and 15 years on vertical cladding and sidings (please see below for limited warranty specific details).

Ideal Uses for Owatrol’s Traditional Stone Decking Paint

  • Giving your decking a new look in our Traditional Stone Decking Paint
  • Protecting decks previously treated with inferior products which have peeled or flaked
  • Long-lasting protection for outdoor wood furniture
  • Also suitable for fencing, cladding and other exterior wood surfaces

If this isn’t quite the colour you were looking for, we also have other similar shades available such as Stone, Traditional Grey, Winter Sky, Light Grey, Grey & Aged Grey.

Please Note: colour shown is given as a guide only. Actual colour will depend on the type and age of the wood surface treated. Always test with a sample first before coating the entire surface.

Warranty

Owatrol International warrants Decking Paint against peeling on wood decks for 5 years and against cracking, peeling and flaking on wood cladding for 15 years from the date of purchase if it is applied on bare wood to a properly prepared surface according to label directions – this means that all previous coatings MUST be properly removed before applying Decking Paint or the adhesion could be compromised.

Owatrol International will, at its option, replace the material or refund the purchase price if Decking Paint does not perform as described above. Please see the technical data for the full warranty.

Always read the Decking Paint Product Information before using and follow the instructions carefully.

Surface Preparation

New wood surfaces

Before using Decking Paint, all surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease and mildew. However, in addition new wood also has a hard shiny surface known as mill glaze which prevents maximum penetration – preventing any coating from adhering properly. We would always recommend new wood is treated with Seasonite new wood protection and then allowed to weather for a minimum of 6 months after which time Decking Paint can be applied following the  instructions for weathered wood.

Weathered wood surfaces

Uncoated wood surfaces which have weathered for 6 months of more simply need a thorough cleaning to restore their original colour and remove any built-up dirt and grime before applying decking paint. To do this simply use Net-Trol wood cleaner which is scrubbed on, allowed to work and then rinsed off. Be sure to allow your wood to dry thoroughly for 48 hours afterwards before applying Decking Paint.

Previously coated surfaces

In this case, first sand or scrape to remove any loose, flaking or peeling finish (if there is any). If necessary, you should strip the surface with Dilunett Gel before cleaning and neutralising it with Net-Trol wood cleaner. Then allow 48 hours for the surface to dry before applying Decking Paint.

Application of Owatrol’s Decking Paint

Owatrol’s Decking Paint is easy to apply by following these simple instructions.

First apply a coat of Decking Paint avoiding heavy application. Be sure to work it into the grooves of the deck to ensure even protection. Next allow this coat to dry for 3-4 hours before applying a second coat. If applying by spray, always back-brush or back-roll immediately after application to ensure uniformity of colour, coverage and penetration.

Maintenance

Surfaces with harsh exposure to weather or traffic will wear more quickly than other areas. In these cases, clean affected areas with Net-Trol and recoat as necessary.

Clean Up

Clean all tools and equipment with soap and water whilst still wet. If allowed to dry, remove with paint stripper.

Rags soaked in this product should be soaked with water before disposing of with household waste.

Please Note: Woods high in tannins e.g. Cedar, Ipe, Oak, Teak will darken when treated with Aquanett, Prepdeck or Dilunett. Neutralising with Net-Trol immediately after rinsing will lighten and restore the woods colour.

It is imperative that a contact time test is done when using Aquanett, Prepdeck or Dilunett on Oak, Chestnut and other high tannin content woods to avoid blackening the wood – Refer to the relevant TDS.

Things to Remember

  • Before starting your project, test penetration and absorbency by sprinkling water lightly onto the wood. If the water is absorbed rapidly, surface is free of contamination and ready for staining. If water is repelled, thorough preparation, as for new wood must be performed.
  • Before starting application, test the colour choice on a small area and allow to dry to determine final colour.
  • Purchase sufficient product for the whole job and mix all product together before starting to avoid colour variances.
  • If applying with a sprayer it must be (.017-.021 tip at 1800-2000 psi (124-138 bars)
  • Cover everything you do not wish to coat, including plants and shrubs.
  • Apply between 10°C and 35°C.
  • Do not apply in direct sunlight, on hot surfaces.
  • Do not apply if cold and/or wet weather is expected within 48 hours.
  • Mix product thoroughly before and during application. Do not thin.
  • Always work the entire length of a deck board or horizontal siding to a logical break, such as a window or door frame.
  • Vertical siding should be coated from top to bottom.

This is an excellent product and we have completed a large decking area with the paint, the finish is excellent, did take 3 coats to get the finish we wanted but well worth all the preparation as it does cover and we have yet to see any cracks or chips.
all we need to do now is stop the birds from leaving presents on the deck!!!!

    Hi,
I am so pleased to say how excellent the fence paint is. The coverage is fantastic and the colour suits our forest school area. We were fortunate to be donated some paint for our developing forest school area. We are a small special needs school and the area looks amazing for our children.

I have to say what a pleasure it was to meet Gary and his father Ken! What a brilliant family business! I would recommend everyone to purchase their products from Owatrol!

    Thanks

Found this product after searching the internet for the best product to use on my old decking. Used the Sea Blue colour. Only needed 2 coats and now looks very smart. Covered well and dried very quickly so did not have to worry about rain too much. Everyone who has seen it is very impressed. Would definitely recommend.

I LOVE these products, I first came across them living for nearly 15 years in Sweden from 1999. I was introduced to them by the local paint store and used the Swedish Red on all my out houses and sheds, others painted once every other year, I painted once and left in 2014 – the sheds looked great still.

I also did the wooden parts of the house and used once the E-B solution primer added to some masonry paint I had and wanted to use on wood paneling, it was a great success.

Now back in the West Country I have bought a timber building – originally Swedish 1950’s , painted first with a cream paint which obviously lasted long. I found out it was believed to be Owatrol! Then the buildings were painted with a brown yukky stain – which has stayed on all this time being replenished from time to time. I wanted to paint it and had one can of Slate Blue solid colour – YIPPEE it’s the perfect colour to do my house. I found a small independent paint store about 30 mins away and hey presto they had some cans OF …………….. SLATE BLUE!
I’ve started June 2017 – BUT I know I won’t have enough so will have to perhaps decide to paint one of the gable end walls with another colour UNLESS I can find some slate blue ???????
Is there any anywhere? I’ve searched the internet high and low through many pages, tried ebay, marketplace and preloved sites….. I’m happy with half cans too and will pay courier charges.

Failing that does anyone have any idea what is the closest colour to the Slate Blue 303 – so I could maybe use that on my end walls instead?

Looking forward to a positive response 🙂

      Hi there!

It’s great that you’re such a fan of Owatrol products and you certainly seem to be working hard to keep using them – I’m pleased to say we can definitely be of help here. Slate Blue – 303 has not been discontinued, it is just now called ‘Blue’ but is the same 303 we have just changed the name as we have adapted the colour range of our 3 opaque finished to be the same. You can purchase ‘Blue’ in Solid Colour Stain, Shed & Fence Paint or Decking Paint and they should all be the same colour as the ‘Slate Blue’ you have already. If you’re uncertain we’d recommend purchasing a sample pot first.

      Hope this helps,
      The Owatrol Team

Used this after dissapointment with both wicks own brand followed later by “does’nt do what it says on the tin”
I had put 6 coats of the wicks on to bare decking and it lasted less than 18 months and the actual cuprinol colour was so far away from the advertised colour on the tin that I took it off again next day……its application suggested a similar quality to wicks stuff. Got on internet and found a guy who lays decking for a living and reccomended your product.
Difference in quality is obvious, you can feel the adhesion as you brush it on……bare wood application again…. two coats were fine and it took a wee while longer to dry as some of my decked area is enclosed and out of the sun.
So save yourself time and hastle and get what I consider by far the best decking paint I,ve found….you may even save money in the long run if like me you have tried other products which are not effective. Cannot comment on durability yet but quietly confident

This sounds perfect as the previous paint didn’t last very long and was not cheap! Begins with a V! Do we have to strip off or can we paint on top, planning to go dark grey from dark blue

      Hi Sue,

Unfortunately you will need to remove the previous paint as otherwise the Decking Paint will be adhering to the old finish rather than the wood and so will only be as good as that finish in terms of adherence (which seems like it has been disappointing). You would need to remove the old finish with a suitable stripper (we’d recommend trying a sample of Dilunett) to take it back to bare wood so that the Decking Paint can adhere to the wood.

      Hi Jade,

If your decking is untreated you’ll just need to clean it with Net-Trol and then wait for it to dry fully before applying Decking Paint. You don’t need to treat it with anything else as Decking Paint itself provides the moisture and UV protection for your wood.

If you need any further help please don’t hesitate to get in touch,
      The Owatrol Team
