Floor Vernis

Oxid Floor Vernis is a single-pack clear varnish, for use on new or oxidised metals

Floor Vernis packaging
  • For use on new or oxidised metal surfaces
  • Excellent resistance to wear, abrasion and scratches
  • Decorates and protects metal
  • Easy application with an anti-slip satin finish
  • Flexible coating expands and contracts with the surface so does not peel or flake

Floor Vernis is a single-pack clear metal floor varnish with an anti-slip satin finish. Enriched with polyurethane-modified alkyd resins for added durability, Floor Vernis can be applied on new or oxidised metal floor structures where the natural look of the metal surface is to be maintained.

Resistant to both mechanical and chemical abrasion Floor Vernis is easy to apply and hard wearing.

Ideal uses for Floor Vernis

  • New or oxidised metal surfaces
  • Use on corridors, in offices, on stairways etc.
  • Maintains the natural look of the surface
  • Expands and contracts with the structure, so will not peel or flake

Surface Preparation

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of all grease, oil, salt and other surface contamination. Use an appropriate solvent depending on the substrate and contamination e.g. Pura-Trol*, acetone, water etc. to clean the surface and prior to any of the following preparation processes.

Ferrous Metals (New or Rusted):

  • Remove all traces of mill scale, rust, rust scale and other foreign matter by blasting, grinding or mechanical abrasion.
  • Round off any sharp edges to allow better film build.
  • Remove all blast or manual preparation residue by vacuum cleaner, air blower or stiff clean brush.
  • If required and desired wipe over surface with a cloth soaked in a fast flash off solvent such as Acetone (NOT White Spirit) to remove any remaining dust residue. Allow to dry.
  • Apply an application of Owatrol Oil and allow to dry.

Non-ferrous Metals (New or Oxidised)

  • Abrade surface using appropriate grade abrasive paper or a phosphoric passivating solution
  • e.g. Pura-Trol (See ‘Dilutions’ below).
  • For Aluminium surfaces ensure abrasive is compatible.
  • If required thoroughly dust off and wipe surface with a cloth soaked in a fast flash off solvent such as Acetone (NOT White Spirit) to remove any remaining dust residue. Allow to dry.
  • Apply an application of Owatrol Oil and allow to dry

Galvanised/Zinc Surfaces

  • Pickle the surface using a phosphoric passivating solution e.g. Pura-Trol (See ‘Dilutions’ below).
  • Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.
  • Apply an application of Owatrol Oil and allow to dry.

Rusted Surfaces (To maintain the rust appearance)

  • Remove all loose and flaking rust back to a sound surface and edge by wire brush or scraping.
  • Thoroughly dust off.
  • Apply Owatrol Oil to saturation and allow to dry.

Previously Coated Surfaces

  • Remove all previous coatings by suitable means -blasting, grinding, mechanical abrasion or stripping e.g. DSP 800 to restore the surface to it’s original condition.
  • After stripping rinse surface with acetone or warm water to neutralise the surface.
  • Allow to dry.
  • If required abrade surface with appropriate grade abrasive.
  • Thoroughly dust off.
  • Apply Owatrol Oil to saturation and allow to dry.

Note: Where the surface is rinsed with water allow to dry 24 to 72 hours before applying Owatrol Oil.

*Dilutions

Pura-Trol

  • 1 part Pura-Trol to 5 parts water.
  • Apply by cloth or brush.
  • Leave to work 5-10 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry

Application of Floor Vernis

  • Use as is. Do not thin.
  • Stir well before and during use.
  • Apply 1st coat of Floor Vernis and allow to dry 24 hours.
  • Sand surface with 280 grit abrasive and thoroughly dust off.
  • Apply 2nd coat of Floor Vernis.

Note: Adding Owatrol Oil to Floor Vernis, makes brushing easier and gives Floor Vernis even greater flexibility, further reducing the risk of peeling and cracking.

Clean up

Clean all tools and equipment with White Spirits while still wet. If allowed to dry, remove with paint stripper.

Recommendations after application

  • Wait a minimum of 72 hours before replacing any furniture. Protect base of feet with soft pads.
  • Do not cover the varnished surface with carpets or protective covers for a minimum of 15 days after applying Floor Vernis.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Cleaning

  • Clean surface regularly with a brush or vacuum cleaner.
  • For the first 3 to 15 days Floor Vernis may be cleaned with a gentle soap cleaner e.g. Soapclean* compatible with floor varnishes and a very well wrung out mop, there after clean in the normal manner.
  • Do not use aggressive chemical cleaners for at least 3 weeks after applying Floor Vernis to remove grease and any other type of dirt that has accumulated on the surface.

Maintenance

Floor Vernis in good condition:

  • Sand surface with 280 grit abrasive and thoroughly dust off.
  • Apply 1st coat of Floor Vernis with 25% Owatrol Oil added.
  • Allow to dry 24 to 48 hours.
  • Apply 2nd coat of Floor Vernis.

Floor Vernis in poor condition:

  • See ‘Previously Coated Surfaces’ in ‘Surface Preparation’ above.
  • Apply Floor Vernis as directed in ‘Application’ above.

Things to remember

  • Cover everything you do not wish to paint.
  • Apply between 5ËšC and 35ËšC.
  • Do not apply in direct sunlight or on to hot surfaces.
  • Ensure room is well ventilated when using inside.
