Last summer, we heard from Alex of Tiny Victorian Home on Instagram who reached out to us about her garden decks. Alex explained that they were in need of a makeover and that she really wanted to use a paint to give them a new lease of life.
After previously speaking with her followers, she was warned about using paint on her decks as paint finishes always fail. However, after doing some of her own research, Alex then found Owatrol Decking Paint and after reading that it does not peel or flake, she decided to reach out to us for some further information.
We recommended that Alex first use Net-Trol to clean her decks (as there were no previous finishes on them she did not need to use a stripping product) and then finish them with Decking Paint once dry. We sent her out a free colour card (which you can also order on our Decking Paint page) which shows off all 35 of our colours, so she could decide which samples she wanted to try.
After a little deliberation, Alex decided to try out 3 colours; Traditional Grey, Light Grey and White. After painting the samples on to some off cuts of wood, she decided to go with Traditional Grey.
We think you will all agree that the end results are amazing! Alex is very happy with the result and we’re sure her decks will look amazing for many years to come.
What makes Owatrol Decking Paint different?
E-B is a paint additive for use in water-based paints that acts as a stabiliser. It saturates deep into the surface of the wood to firmly bond the paint to the substrate, helping to alleviate flaking and peeling problems.
We are so confident in our Decking Paint’s ability that we actually have a 5 year guarantee* on it against peeling and flaking when applied to a properly prepared deck!
How to prepare your deck for Decking Paint
If your deck has a previous coating
If your deck has a previous finish on it, this must be removed before application of Decking Paint. This is because Decking Paint must bond to bare, clean wood to give it its strength and prevent it from peeling. Any previous oils, paints etc. will create a barrier and the Decking Paint will not be able to adhere properly.
We recommend using a product such as;
- Prepdeck – for removal of wood finishes, stains and mill glaze
- Aquanett – for the removal of both old and new wood oils
- Dilunett – for the removal of any oil and alkyd based paint, varnish or wood stain
After the previous coating has been removed, you should use a wood cleaning product such as Net-Trol.
If your deck does not have a previous coating
If you have no previous coatings on your decking, we recommend using Net-Trol to give it a deep and thorough clean.
Net-Trol is a powerful wood cleaner and brightener which restores greyed and weathered wood to its natural colour without damaging the wood’s fibres. It is fast-acting and can restore the original colour of your wood in as little as 15 minutes – without the need to sand it!
Once your wood is clear of any previous coatings and is clean and dry, you are then ready to paint!
Application of Decking Paint
Decking Paint is very easy to apply. Begin by first applying one coat of Decking Paint avoiding heavy application. Be sure to work it into the grooves of the deck by using a brush to ensure even protection.
Next, allow this coat to dry for 3-4 hours. Once dry, apply a second coat. If applying by spray, always back-brush or back-roll immediately after application to ensure uniformity of colour, coverage and saturation.
Remember that surfaces with harsh exposure to weather or traffic will wear more quickly than other areas. In these cases, you should clean the affected areas with Net-Trol and recoat as necessary.
We hope you found this post on garden decks being restored with Net-Trol and Decking Paint interesting! Special thank you to Alex of @tiny_vicorian_home on Instagram for using Owatrol and letting us showcase her beautiful garden decks!
