Our Dark Brown Decking Paint is a premium finish suitable for use on new wood, weathered wood and even previously treated wood. It is fortified with Owatrol’s Emulsa-Bond helping it to provide unsurpassed adhesion on both horizontal and vertical surfaces where competitors would require extensive preparation and priming whilst providing a rich matt finish perfect for decking.
The Decking Paint range has now been expanded and it is available in 35 stylish colours and is incredibly easy to use with just 2 coats needed in most cases. It provides long-lasting performance, even in high traffic areas like your garden decking and when applied correctly to bare wood is guaranteed against peeling or flaking for 5 years on horizontal surfaces such as decking and 15 years on vertical cladding and sidings (please see below for limited warranty specific details).
Ideal Uses for Owatrol’s Dark Brown Decking Paint
- Giving your decking a new look in our Dark Brown Decking Paint
- Protecting decks previously treated with inferior products which have peeled or flaked
- Long-lasting protection for outdoor wood furniture
- Also suitable for fencing, cladding and other exterior wood surfaces
If this isn’t quite the Brown you were looking for, we also have other shades available such as Canyon, Coffee, Bark Brown, Mahogany, Mid Brown & Traditional Oxford Brown.
Please Note: colour shown is given as a guide only. Actual colour will depend on the type and age of the wood surface treated. Always test with a sample first before coating the entire surface.
Warranty
Owatrol International warrants Decking Paint against peeling on wood decks for 5 years and against cracking, peeling and flaking on wood cladding for 15 years from the date of purchase if it is applied on bare wood to a properly prepared surface according to label directions – this means that all previous coatings MUST be properly removed before applying Decking Paint or the adhesion could be compromised.
Owatrol International will, at its option, replace the material or refund the purchase price if Decking Paint does not perform as described above. Please see the technical data for the full warranty.
Surface Preparation
New wood surfaces
Before using Decking Paint, all surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease and mildew. However, in addition new wood also has a hard shiny surface known as mill glaze which prevents maximum penetration – preventing any coating from adhering properly. We would always recommend new wood is treated with Seasonite new wood protection and then allowed to weather for a minimum of 6 months after which time Decking Paint can be applied following the  instructions for weathered wood.
Weathered wood surfaces
Uncoated wood surfaces which have weathered for 6 months of more simply need a thorough cleaning to restore their original colour and remove any built-up dirt and grime before applying decking paint. To do this simply use Net-Trol wood cleaner which is scrubbed on, allowed to work and then rinsed off. Be sure to allow your wood to dry thoroughly for 48 hours afterwards before applying Decking Paint.
Previously coated surfaces
In this case, first sand or scrape to remove any loose, flaking or peeling finish (if there is any). If necessary, you should strip the surface with Dilunett Gel before cleaning and neutralising it with Net-Trol wood cleaner. Then allow 48 hours for the surface to dry before applying Decking Paint.
Application of Owatrol’s Decking Paint
Owatrol’s Decking Paint is easy to apply by following these simple instructions.
First apply a coat of Decking Paint avoiding heavy application. Be sure to work it into the grooves of the deck to ensure even protection. Next allow this coat to dry for 3-4 hours before applying a second coat. If applying by spray, always back-brush or back-roll immediately after application to ensure uniformity of colour, coverage and penetration.
Maintenance
Surfaces with harsh exposure to weather or traffic will wear more quickly than other areas. In these cases, clean affected areas with Net-Trol and recoat as necessary.
Clean Up
Clean all tools and equipment with soap and water whilst still wet. If allowed to dry, remove with paint stripper.
Rags soaked in this product should be soaked with water before disposing of with household waste.
Please Note: Woods high in tannins e.g. Cedar, Ipe, Oak, Teak will darken when treated with Aquanett, Prepdeck or Dilunett. Neutralising with Net-Trol immediately after rinsing will lighten and restore the woods colour.
It is imperative that a contact time test is done when using Aquanett, Prepdeck or Dilunett on Oak, Chestnut and other high tannin content woods to avoid blackening the wood – Refer to the relevant TDS.
Things to Remember
- Before starting your project, test penetration and absorbency by sprinkling water lightly onto the wood. If the water is absorbed rapidly, surface is free of contamination and ready for staining. If water is repelled, thorough preparation, as for new wood must be performed.
- Before starting application, test the colour choice on a small area and allow to dry to determine final colour.
- Purchase sufficient product for the whole job and mix all product together before starting to avoid colour variances.
- If applying with a sprayer it must be (.017-.021 tip at 1800-2000 psi (124-138 bars)
- Cover everything you do not wish to coat, including plants and shrubs.
- Apply between 10°C and 35°C.
- Do not apply in direct sunlight, on hot surfaces.
- Do not apply if cold and/or wet weather is expected within 48 hours.
- Mix product thoroughly before and during application. Do not thin.
- Always work the entire length of a deck board or horizontal siding to a logical break, such as a window or door frame.
- Vertical siding should be coated from top to bottom.

We chose the dark brown decking paint and the product was a good consistency and went on well with a large brush. The finished look was professional with good coverage, so hopefully we won’t be repainting for a while.

Really impressed with the finish and how it seems to be protected some scaffold boards I had installed (instead of decking).

I ordered 2 sample pots of the Decking Paint due to not being able to decide on a colour. After prepping a small area of decking that is around a garden (Cleaning/Sanding it down)We placed the decking paint on and could not believe how smooth this went on and how good the coverage was from this small trial pot.
Unfortunately both colours were not what we were looking for and with us not painting the whole large decking area in the garden we have used cuprinol decking paint to do the small area’s we wanted to do, as they had the right colour but trust me, if you are wanting to paint your whole decking do not go for the cheaper brands as this is the best we have used and I would highly recommend this Decking Paint. It may be expensive but you get what you pay for and it is as good as they say it is. If unsure try the trial pot first, I will be surprised if I read any reviews that say anything bad, just be sure to prep fully first.

Very expensive compared to other brands but willing to pay if it means it will last for 5yrs before needs re-doing, as other brands definitely don’t. The paint arrived really quickly from ordering and tester pots very helpful. Good choice of colours. Really happy with finish so far.

Very expensive, but hopefully worth it if I don’t need to repaint every year as previously.
Covered very well and looks solid and even. One 2.5 litre can was enough to paint 15 sq. metres, twice.

We used Ronseal decking paint before which is akin to using cold tea and about as effective. It used to peel within weeks of going on. We decided to try something new as it couldn’t be any worse that what we had used before. Although expensive it does the job 1000% more effectively. Really pleased with the result and hopefully repainting the decking will become an every 5 year job rather than an annual one as has been the case thus far.

I spent a lot of money last year on this product after cheaper ‘bnq’ products failing. I following all the instructions, cleaned the decking with prep deck, following by net trol (more money spent) then hundred of pounds on the paint, only to fine by the time winter came the decking started peeling. Jet washed it recently reading for spring and 80% of the decking pint has come off! I’ve been told I need to sand it all back and re paint it, more money… if this doesn’t work I hope I will get some money back!

Hi there Jamie,
We are sorry to hear you have had a bad experience with our Decking Paint – this is most unusual. We would like to help you get to the bottom of the problem. Please feel free to give us a call so we can help you and discuss it: 01582 592707
We would need to know:
– How old the decking is
– How big the area is
– How many other treatments have been applied to the surface
– How much Prepdeck & Net-Trol was used and how were they applied
– How long was left after rinsing the Net-Trol
We hope to hear from you and get this sorted.
All the best,
The Owatrol Team

I’m a P&D First time I’ve used this system. I striped the decking with Prep-Deck and cleaned with Net – Trol, followed by Stone grey decking paint. It was excellent. The strip and cleaners took the Deck right back to the wood, and the paint had great coverage, and only took two coats to finish. My clients were over the moon with the results. Although it’s early days, I’ve no reason to think it won’t last.

Spent ages trying to find good decking paint! Many just didn’t work. This is expensive but well worth it. Used three colours to create a beach theme effect.
Lovely thick paint that dried very quickly. The only colour that needed more than one coat was the white.

Insights from and insider.
I’m a Designer and I have worked with the marketing and production of the other ‘deck paint’ products on offer at your local DIY centres.
These big name brands promise, but only deliver in the short term.
If you’ve spent the money on the construction, and spent time on the proper preparation, a word of advice…Don’t be cavalier with regard to the preservation and finish.
This deck paint is only product that works. Genuinely. Quite literally, you pay for what you get.
With Owatrol you get a professional job that will LAST!
No marketing bullshit.
I know from mistakes of using the products I’ve helped design that this is a costly and flaking-well infuriating.
Stupidly, I fell under the marketing spell, read the copy on the product, saw the price and thought with proper prep, my job would be better…. it wasn’t!
After using a well known, moderately priced product on a correctly prepared surface, it flaked after 1 season.
I had to lift my deck up and paint the reverse, bare side of the timber to rescue my ruined deck.
Using owatrol deck paint on the bare side of my flipped deck, Saved me a rebuild and therefore a lot of money – 3 years on it’s still perfect!
Thank you Owatrol. No thanks commercial brands.
Contrary to popular opinion, you can paint decking. It will last. Just use the right stuff!
