High quality wooden gates can make a real statement at the entrance to your home. That is, as long as they are protected with a high quality finish and looking great! These Iroko gates are making the right kind of statement with some top quality TLC and a beautiful finish provided by D1 Pro and Owatrol Deco.
So, how did Roger of R&A Pressure Washing Services Ltd. get these amazing results? Read on to learn more!
Step 1: Preparing for a new finish
The Iroko gates in this case study had previously been coated with Danish Oil. The finish was no longer making the right kind of statement and needed to be stripped before a new finish could be applied. Roger set to work stripping the gates using Prepdeck.
If you are looking to follow Roger’s application and the gates are going to remain in-situ, then you’ll need to use Aquanett (for wood oils) or Dilunett (for paints and other finishes) instead of Prepdeck. This is because they are gel formulations and as such, which won’t run. However, in this case, the gates were removed from their hinges and so they could be laid flat for the application.
Application of Prepdeck
To use Prepdeck, simply apply it to the surface with a brush and leave it to work for an appropriate length of time. Once the coating/s are begging to lift, scrub the surface and rinse with copious fresh water to remove the residue. After this, you should then immediately neutralise the surface with Net-Trol, which is exactly what Roger did.
He then left it to dry. Once dry, Roger lightly sanded the surface with a 60 grit orbital sander – though this step is not essential.
Step 2: Using D1 Pro to finish and protect
When Roger had completed the preparation work, it was time to apply the D1 Pro.
D1 Pro’s is a saturating oil and as such, its place is inside of the wood. As it penetrates, it pushes out all moisture and air and fills the woods pores with oil – enriching and stabilises it, to provide long-lasting protection. D1 Pro enhances the natural beauty of the wood, whilst being super easy to maintain, requiring no sanding or stripping.
Application of D1 Pro
D1 Pro is applied ‘wet-on-wet’, which means that you apply coats one after the other without allowing the coats to dry in between.
For best results, work in areas that can be coated in 15 minutes, and begin by applying a first generous coat. Allow time for it to be absorbed into the surface (15-30 minutes). Then, apply a second coat as soon as the first has been absorbed without allowing it to dry out.
Continue in this fashion until the wood will accept no more oil and then allow it to dry. You should be left with a rich, matt finish.
Roger needed to apply 3 coats of D1 Pro for these iroko gates.
Step 3: Using Owatrol Deco to protect the metal work
To finish and protect the metal work, Roger then used Owatrol Deco – our rust-inhibiting multi-surface primer and finish. This resulted in a high-gloss black finish, which would also provide long-term protection against corrosion. Owatrol Deco is applied in 2 coats, allowing the first coat 24 hours to dry before applying the second.
We think you’ll agree, it’s a pretty big transformation and these gates are now, once again, making the right kind of statement!
